What the heck is a transaction fee?

I'm not sure about how Kohls does it, but many places break up the $10 amongst each item proportional to the total amount.

They usually take the whole $10 off, unless you give them the $10 bounceback coupon back. I've never had them split it up.

I do agree with you that most stores do though. Usually when they do it is listed on the receipt for each item purchased.

I don't shop at kohls so I can't say what they do but over the holidays there have been more and more reports of stores coming up with masterful ways to ding you on returns.
My target began a "repackaging" fee on items that are in packages such as undershirts if returned.

I think as stores try harder and harder to cut on losses we are going to see more and more restrictions on returns.

I think the days of walking in and getting a "no hassle" return may be coming to an end.

to that end, every one should question the return policy at your favorite stores.

OP here.

Okay, so I took out my receipts (original one and the return one) and I am looking at them right now. Here's what it says....

ORIGINAL ONE:
Blanket-item price $19.99, you save $5.00, final price $14.99
Apparel-item price $25.00, you save $5.00, final price $20.00
Apparel-item price $20.00, you save $4.01, final price $15.99

Then on the bottom it says 15% Pick Your Day (I have never used a coupon at this store before so maybe she had one at the register that she scanned) :confused3 Anyhow, it says that I saved $7.65.

My total that I paid cash for was $44.09

The item that I returned was the last item that is marked as me paying $15.99 (I only bolded the prices because they were bolded on my receipt)

RETURN RECEIPT:
Sports Apparel-
Return Amount $15.99
Trans Disc $2.40
For a total of $13.59 that was credited to me

I was going to call and try to find out what this all meant, but after writing it all down, I know now that it's the 15% discount that she scanned in at the time of purchase. I just thought by the looks of the receipt that I had paid the $15.99 AFTER the discount and thought I should get $15.99 cash back for my return. But I just realized by doing a little math that if you take 15% off of $15.99 it comes out to $13.59 (which is what I got back) My mistake.

Maybe I just looked at the receipt and figured that I paid what was in bold print. Oh well. Got my panties in a bunch over nothing. Thanks for listening to my rant though

I am glad you figured it out, BUT, why would the cashier call it a "transaction fee?" That has me stumped! She should have explained that it was the 15% off that you received.

Odd.

The cashier was probably new (or perhaps they still have seasonal employees working), saw the abbreviation "Trans Disc" on OP's receipt & either misspoke by calling it a fee or wasn't really sure what it meant. Not the best customer service, but doesn't sound like the mistake was intentional.

OP, glad you figured it out & did get the correct amount back!

Actually, it's only $2.40 worth so in my opinion NOT worth the trouble. It's just the principle of it, ya know?
elaine and the boys is right - it's 15%. Not a lot on a $15.99 shirt, but if it had been a $159.99 coat, you'd be upset about the amount, not just the principle, right? :teeth:

Yeah, start with the store closest to you. Bring ALL the paperwork.

eta: moot, now that the OP has found her own solution :)

I got hit with the same thing a couple of weeks before the holidays. I'd picked up a dressy outfit for dd, but it didn't fit her, and I returned it a couple of days later with the receipt. There was no Kohl's cash involved, but they kept 15%. I was really annoyed.

You must have had happen what the OP did - you got a 15% discount when you purchased the dress. Kohl's runs coupons ALL the time, so the cashier probably just scanned one for you when you made your purchase, figuring he/she was doing you a favor. I've had this happen at Kohl's when I didn't have my coupon with me, they just scan one they have at the register. I bet if you check your original receipt again, you'll see a 15% discount taken off at the bottom.

They've done that for me before. Asked me when checking out if I had a percent off coupon, and when I say no, they give it to me for 15% off.
Once I had a 30% off coupon that I left at home and was kicking myself for doing that when the cashier said she'd give it to me.

I shop at Kohls all the time because between the sales/clearances and the coupons I can find some really good deals. BUT I do have to be careful because certain things seem over priced, like some of their kitchen or bath items.
Also I have never had an issue with a return. They seem to have the best return policy of many of the stores I shop at.

I love Kohls - because it really is a no hassle return all the time!

I just returned something and didn't have my receipt, since I used my Kohls charged she looked it up and gave me back my credit.

I like to buy my DS clothes there because I tend to buy early for the season, and then sometimes I find something he didn't wear with the tags on it and I can return it. Every other store has a 90 day return policy. Kohls has no limit!

If you have a coupon it is always taken off the bottom -

Nope, the amount refunded to me was 15% less than what I paid.

work at kohls and chiming in again..the pp are right that is how it'll show up if you used a coupon on your transaction...there werent many days before christmas there wasnt one...

as far as kohls cash if you use it and then return the item bought you can get a refund and not loose the value of the KC but you have to take merc. credit...they arent going to give you cash back plus the 10 bucks since you tech, wouldnt have earned the 10 bucks if you didnt buy the item in question so in order to keep the value of the KC you have to take merch credit..same if you use the gift receipt to return, KC wont be affected and you still end up with merch credit. if you return the item before the earning period is up with the original receipt you loose the value of it no way around that...that is if it takes you below the 50 dollar level you were at.

Also about kohls cash dont forget you can combine receipts..so if you are off on one receipt you can buy something else and have the cashier combine the totals (before tax) to activate Kohls cash.

What if you didn't use the Kohl's cash you earn? I have to return something that I earned KC on but never redeemed. I do not want a merchandise credit, I want my money back, if I bring in the un-redeemed KC will I be able to get a full refund, or am I stuck with either losing $10 or having to spend more at Kohls?
