What the heck are these signs?

Okay, UK friends, I have a question!

I've been doing some work online for a company that does maps, and in looking through the images, I keep seeing certain road signs that we don't have in the US. After looking at them for hours on end, I've gotten really curious! Can you please tell me what on earth these signs mean? I can't figure them out!

(Sorry the pics are so small!)

First, the number circle on top- I'm guessing that this is either the speed limit, or the highway number? And what is the red X below it? No blue allowed?

I've seen a zillion of this one, but I can't figure it out! It doesn't seem to be pointing to anything! "Hey, look over here! More road! Neat, huh?"

I can't even figure out what this is supposed to be a picture of!

And this isn't a sign, but does anyone know where it is? I spent quite a bit of time looking at it today, and it made me curious!

Thanks in advance- I know these are going to drive me nutty until I figure it out!

Speed cameras, for example is may be a 30 miles per hour zone and cameras are ahead to restrict your speed.

Not sure where that is , it isn't Blackpool though.

The picture at the bottom is Southend, I walked along that water front on Wednesday to go and ride the rollercoaster Rage in the picture with my SIL and BIL who live there.

Thanks for all the answers! I never thought about things like speed limit signs looking so different in another country until I saw them. Glad I know what I'm looking at now!!
