Not so sure for women. I like Natalie Merchant and Bonnie Raitt, but I'm not sure that they are the best ever. They just appeal to me the most.

I don't know about best voice ever, but Jeff Buckley's voice was very haunting to me. Unfortunately, he tragically died

As for women, hmmmm....that one is a little harder. I tend to like interesting voices...like Tori Amos. But in terms of pipes, well, it's hard to argue against a Celine Dion or a Whitney Houston. I just don't really like them.

so, any choice I would have made for female singer was already said...I would say not to discount Reba McEntire Gwen Stephani or Janis Joplin....3 ladies who I think belong with any elite group of singers....

See now, this is where it gets tricky. Stevie Nicks is my very favorite all time performer period. BUT, when I break it down into best voice EVER, I have to be careful to focus on the voice only. Stevie sounds great, no doubt, but alot of her appeal to me is her songwriting style and lyrics. So, yes, I guess I stand by my choice of Karen Carpenter - based on voice only.
