We will be leaving on the Ships port side on our cruise from NYC and I would like to know what side the Statue of Liberty is at on the way out and of course opposite on the way back. Can you see the Empire state building from the ship and again which side of the ship. We will be in NYC for a couple of nights before our cruise and was thinking about a harbour cruise but if we can have a good view of the sights when leaving port we may not bother with a harbour cruise. Thanks for any help.

Leaving NYC, the City will be on your Port (left) side and New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty will be on the Starboard (right) side. You will have no difficulty seeing the Empire State building. Deck 7 aft might be a good viewing area as you leave New York Harbor. When you return the Statue of Liberty will be on the Port side. Harbor tours are lots of fun, and there are many different types, including lunch and dinner tours. I've been on most of them even though I live and work in the NYC metro area.

Great information, thats a lot of help. We have a balcony on the port side so when we return from our cruise we will be able to see the statue from our balcony, as it will be pretty early when we return. How close to the statue would you say we will be for pictures. Again thanks for responding.

You should have no problem getting pictures of the Statue of Liberty from the ship.

We were having dinner when our ship sailed out of NYC harbor last fall. A lot of passengers got up from their tables and were taking pics of the statue of liberty through the windows. So it wouldn'tve mattered what side our stateroom was on.

Often ships sail into port in the middle of the night. Even when they list a 6 a.m. arrival time, that's more for customs purposes than an actual arrival time.

On our last Disney cruise, the ship was taking on extra supplies to deliver to Castaway Cay for a sister ship so we were about half an hour late leaving port. No big deal -- the captain could easily make up the difference by increasing speed a few knots over night but one of our table mates was quite indignant that we were leaving late because her DD was planning to wave as we sailed out of port. :rolleyes1

Basically, ships aren't on quite as tight a schedule as airlines.

If you have Main Dining you may be getting ready for or eating dinner (5:45 p.m.) as the ship passes the Statue of Liberty leaving NY Harbor. Take your camera to dinner with you. Most ships return to the NYCruise Terminal between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., so she would pass the Statue of Liberty between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. It will be light at that time of the morning in July in NYC.

I'm going to try to get a photo of the Magic as she passes by the Statue of Liberty when she first enters NY Harbor in May.

The skyline is so close to the ship.....here are some pics along the Hudson as a cruise leaves port.....this was on another cruise line.

You will also pass Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Governor's Island and go under the Verrazzano Narrow Bridge...which is pretty cool.

This was when the Fantasy was in NYC....you can see how close the port is to the city....literally across the Westside Highway. This is where the Magic will dock also.

From the other side of the river.

Thanks for all replies and super pictures. I take it we will also sail under the Brooklyn bridge. Being ignorant of the geography of NYC I thought the bridge in the pictures was the Brooklyn bridge. Please excuse my ignorance but are their two bridges the same or what. Can you nice people of NYC educate me on this. Thank you

We are scheduled to sail out of the Manhattan Terminal which is on the West Side Drive, on the west side of Manhattan. The only bridge we'll go "under" is the Verranzano. The Brooklyn Bridge is on the east side of the island so we won't go under that, but it might be visable once we are in the harbor at the southern tip of the island, looking up the East River on the east side of the island.
There should also be a bunch of lighthouses to view - anyone who has sailed from Manhattan know more?

when the ship is in Port in NYC if you look upriver you will see the George Washington Bridge that connects New York and New Jersey.

Downriver you will see the Verrazano Narrows Bridge when you get closer.

I forget what lighthouses there are.

You will pass much of the island of Manhattan (south of the port) and on the New Jersey side you will pass the towns of Weehawken (directly across from the port), Jersey City, Hoboken and you will also be able to see the Bayonne Cruise Terminal on the starboard side when cruising down the river. It really is a cool ride!!!

I have pic in my photo album from a cruise of out NYC back in 2000 with the Twin Towers in the background....now that was an awe inspiring sight!!!

That would be a really interesting photo to see and I am sure others would like to see it if it were possible for you to dig it out and post it here.

Never been to NYC before, so forgive me if this is a dumb question or has been answered in this thread already without me noticing it ...

We have two days there prior to the cruise, and among many many other things, were planning to take the free ferry to Staten Island and back - to get a view of the harbour, the Statue of Liberty and all that.

Do you guess that we don't really need to do that and can concentrate instead on doing other, "land-based" sightseeing in our precious short two days?

(We are doing a back-to-back, so will have even more chances to see the sights from onboard.)

Thank you! :flower3:

Here you go...I just scanned them and uploaded. It was 2 night cruise to nowhere with my girlfriends (Carnival)....which we are doing again on the Magic this summer.

It was August 22, 2000.

Miss them very much.

Great photos MJ! I remember seeing the Twin Towers as we left NYC on our Carnival Cruise to Canada during Labor Day weekend in September 2000, shortly after your cruise.

Great pictures and info. I can't wait to be aboard the Magic in 69 days! :cool1:

Those are memorable pictures, thanks for sharing. I had made one trip to NYC before they were gone and did not make it to see them. My next visit was after so I got to go to ground zero.

I took the Staten island ferry out and you are still pretty far from the statue. You will have a much better view from the ship so I would just be up on the deck and go to the starboard side after you get your picture of the Empire State building. (unless you have a really good telephoto lens of course)

I would do more land based things, try taking one of the buses that you can get on and off and see the city would be better IMO.

Thank you for your advice. We were all going to take the Hop on Hop off bus but with 5 Grandchildren ranging from 2 - 8 years we felt this might be too much for them to keep up so we hired a private tour with Family in new York, I take your point about the Staten ferry and will now give that a miss.
