What should I see on/off Broadway?

DD and I will have free time in NYC on Saturday night (Jan 3) and are considering taking in a show. I'll most likely get the tickets at TKTS, so I know this limits what we might see. However... I don't even know what's playing, what's really good/a sleeper, etc. We have seen Chicago, can't get Lion King at a discount, and already have tickets for the Rockettes (DD is taking a class with them, then we'll see the show). What have you seen/recommend?
Also... we are staying at Margaritaville on 7th Ave. Any input on the restaurants at the resort?

I just looked at what’s on Broadway currently and my recommendations are Hadestown (Greek mythology story line), MJ the musical (if you like MJ songs the show is great with amazing dancing). Buena Vista Social club is getting great reviews but I have not see it. If you haven’t seen Hamilton that’s worth seeing live too even if you have seen the Disney+ recording.

&Juliet and Hell’s Kitchen is in our current Broadway across America tour season so I haven’t seen them yet. Hell’s Kitchen was written by Alecia Keys and is about her life growing up in NYC. Moulin Rouge I also enjoyed but it’s a juke box musical which some people don’t like.

I also like Book of Mormon but it is extremely crass and vulgar at times and not for everyone.

Venture Off-Broadway for some more ambitious fare. The big corporate shows don’t do it for me. Oedipus (on Broadway) is getting raves, but might be difficult to get.

I second MJAlthough I haven ,t seen it, DS plays for lots of both on and off Broadway shows, and says that ones good. There’s also a fun one off Broadway, but tomorrow’s the last day.

My actor son lives in NYC and is constantly seeing shows. His top recommendation is Ragtime. He's seeing it later this week for the second time. The cast is amazing and it features Joshua Henry, one of his all-time favorite vocalists. He saw Oedipus a few weeks ago and loved it, although it's a more off-beat show and may not appeal to everyone. We saw Hadestown when we visited earlier this year, which was excellent. My son also loved Death Becomes Her and Operation Mincemeat, both comedies. Of course you can't go wrong with the more mainstream, long-running shows like Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Moulin Rouge (which we really enjoyed) and Wicked.

I'd totally do Ragtime or Operation Mincemeat too.

I worked the original production of Ragtime and am really looking forward to seeing it when I'm in NYC in January.

Operation Mincemeat! It was so unexpectedly good, that we saw it a second time, and are making plan to see it again! Comedy, fun story line, some amazing vocals, and the fact that there are only 5 performers…I highly recommend it!

Also if you have free time in the morning check out Bryanthebusinesssanalyst on instagram. Every so often he publishes a rush report which can help you decide if you want to try for a rush ticket for a particular show.

And don’t forget to check out TKTS live before you hop in line. It’ll give you real time availability for shows.

As for recommendations, I haven’t been in a few month. Hearing great things about Ragtime but that definitely doesn’t fit in the budget category. Going in a few weeks to meet my daughter for a two show day and based on her husband’s recommendation we may try for Buena Vista Socisl Club. He said the book was kind of weak but the music was fabulous. Also considering Operstion Mincemeat.

Oh, one more thought. As it gets closer to showtime, check out sites like Stubhub. If people think they’re going to get stuck with tickets they’ll start lowering their prices. Daughter and I got great seats to Sunset Boulevard this way back when it was playing.

I've been recommending Hadestown to everyone since I saw it in February 2020, the week after they won the Tony for it. It's SO good!

Aladdin is well done. If you want to see a Disney musical, it's quite good.

I liked Six but my problem with it is it’s too short. If I’m paying I want my butt in the seat for at least two hours. Unless, of course, it’s a bad show.

Same thing for Oh Mary. I felt the cabaret shtick at the end was mainly there to lengthen the show. Also, the OP is seeing a show with her (adult) daughter. Some of the show is, shall I say, rather adult material. I saw it with my son-in-law and daughter, and parts of it made me a bit uncomfortable. Had I been alone it wouldn’t have been an issue.
