What should I have done?

I just got off the phone with MS and am excited we made our first reservation. However, they didn't have exactly what I was looking for available (studio w/ either standard or BW preferred view). The CM all she could book was studio preferred (no Boardwalk), so I took it.

But now I am wondering if I could have/should have waitlisted for what we really wanted? If so, how do I handle this?

Congratulations on your first booking. Perhaps if you really have your heart set on something else it wouldn't hurt to waitlist for it. I've seen many people proclaim that their waitlists have come through.

Since you already have a "fall back" reservation, there is no risk to calling MS and putting your name on a waitlist. In fact, I believe you can be on two waitlists at once...one for BW View and one for Standard.

There's no downside to being on the waitlist since the "worst" thing that could happen is you have a Preferred Pool/Canal View. Not too bad a position to be in!

You can call back and get on the waitlist at any time. If you really want standard or guaranteed - go for it. You have your back up in place (Preferred - Garden/Pool view) so no harm in waitlisting.

There are two ways to waitlist - waitlist for the entire stay (you don't get it unless all the days you need become avaiable at once) or you can waitlist by individual days.

The "all or nothing" is safest - no chance of having to change rooms in the middle of your stay, but it also has less of a chance of coming through. They don't hold days for you, so if only some of the days become available, they will go to someone else on the waitlist if the available days match their request.

The individual day method is more likley to come through, but you may not get all the days and then you have to change rooms during your stay.

You can ask MS to notify you by phone before actually booking something that comes through on the waitlist or you can tell MS to just book it if it come through. If they call and you aren't there, they leave a message giving you until 5 pm the following business day to call them back. If they auto book it, they just send a confirmation letter and you find out when the letter comes.
