What should I expect different in the South?

I am from Mississippi, moved to NYC for 20 years, now back in the semi-south (North Carolina, which really isn't that southern;))

North Carolina native here (a rare breed, I know) and I beg to differ with you. Semi-south? Not really that southern? Guess it depends on what part of the state you're in. If you mean Charlotte, Raleigh, and Asheville, then yes, you may be right. Of course, those ARE the parts of the state that have the most transplants.

Um, that was me. :scared: I thought it was funny, yes- because it is a parody song! Of course, nobody in their right minds, southern or northern, eastern or western, would want to shoot someone else and think it was funny IN REAL LIFE.

The song is a comedic take on being slightly annoyed by hearing people 'put down' your hometown and way of doing things. Let's not read anything else into it. :wave2:

Sometimes the PCness of this board astounds me...

It has nothing to do with PCness. I was just pointing something out. And let's talk about being offended. There are pages in this thread with people taking offense to fried food.

Very much agreed..
That was one silly post about a silly song.
A joke... Maybe not such a good one... But a stupid little joke song.
But not, 'REAL LIFE'.... Are you serious???
And, for the record, I have never, ever, personally, heard such a song. Not in my whole life here in the South.
And, I live in area with LOTS of transplants and snowbirds.
I have never heard anything even close.

Funny but, it seems okay, how there can all kinds of negativity and negative stereotypes about the south here. But one stupid little post about a funny stupid song is taken so seriously and is used as an accusation???? Seriously??? Like there are not a GaBillion negative and bad jokes about southern people??? OMG???

Astounding, for sure.
But, def. not surprising.

You are, like usual, way more upset about this than I was. Actually, I take that back. I wasn't even upset. Relax. :hippie:

NC native here also. And yes, those cities you listed are full of "Yankees". :snooty:

I just got back from a stay in SC. People were really polite and I got ma'amed to death. They like to spend a lot of time on small talk with strangers. I found people inserting their religious beliefs into conversations, with the assumption that I shared those beliefs in a way I found odd and uncomfortable.

The food isn't my thing. Too much fried stuff, with heavy sauces. And they ruin iced tea with sugar.

Something that took me some time to get used to was how slow...I mean SLOW...the drive thru windows at places like McDonald's are. Now I'm totally used to it and it doesn't seem slow at all. But I love taking my sisters to a drive thru when they visit me from Long island just to watch them get super pissed off at the slow pace.

Actually, those cities are full of human beings from all over the United States and the world.

I currently live in Charlotte. I can eat at an Ethiopian restaurant one evening and a Jamaican restaurant the next. I can go to fabulous art exhibits and hear many different languages at my favorite tiny coffee shop. There are people that don’t look like me, people that don’t have my history and people that have fantastic stories to tell.

Transplants are good. They bring culture and change. This is why I could never move back to my small Mississippi town. They are afraid of change. They dislike “outsiders” because they are not like them.

It is so sad (and a bit weird) to be angry that people of different backgrounds have moved into “your” area. Which, of course, you know isn’t “yours”, right? This is America. Open your mind to change. It feels wonderful :flower3:

You don't recognize "tongue in cheek" with the snooty smilie at the end? Well, bless your pea pickin' heart!!!

Transplants are wonderful, aren't they? And so are the cities that you named. They are full of diverse people and have made these cities desirable places to live and visit.

It would be so boring (and creepy) if the same families kept reproducing and nobody moved in or out:scared:

North Carolina is so open to outsiders. I think all of the fantastic universities and top rate hospitals encourage educated, diverse people from all over the nation and world to move here.

I live in Mississippi and in our small city there are people from around the world. Students come from all over to attend the University and many businesses are owned by folks who came here from other countries. No one is angry at any one.

The students are welcomed anywhere at any time and the businesses are frequented the same as any other. There are a multitude of churches of all faiths and all are respected as much as any other. ( and if you choose not to attend any of them, thats ok too)

Change is certainly welcomed as this area has been growing for many years. We welcome new ideas and new cultures.

You seem a little tightly wound. Just a wee tad.

Really? I am as relaxed as can be. I think sometimes it is difficult to feel a tone when reading. But, trust me, I am not tightly wound.

I absolutely love discussion boards and hearing other people's ideas, while offering a different perspective.

Where in Mississippi are you from?

It's not just the southern area that may have towns that are un-accepting and hard to move into. Pennsylvania is the same. There are many, many areas around Pittsburgh and even the suburbs right out side of the city where it is very difficult to move into and be accepted, almost impossible. Not to mention the central, north central part of that Commonwealth, a new arrival would not be welcome. Being that's the case, I'm sure there it it the same in other northern states.

Exactly, it's idiotic to act as though only certain areas of the country are not accepting of people's differences. There are places like that all over the world. Even within some of the places where there is diversity, there are groups of people that look down on others.
