What should I do school related

It is a tradidtion on our family on St.Patrick's day to go to a ceremony at the Fire Fighters memorial and go and watch my dad and uncle in the parade. The memorial means a lot to us because about 20 years ago my dad's best friend/coworker was killed in the line of duty. This year my DD is in school. Do I write her a note a couple days before or just call her in that day? Her school is actually pretty easy going. I just don't want it to come across that it is just for the parade. This day means so much more then that to our family.

I would just call in that day. You don't really need a reason--just say "DD won't be in school today." If you want to elaborate, just say you're going to a memorial service.
