What rides do you consider "untouchable" ?

Since Vike is allowing us to anser the question with our choice of basis, I'll choose this one: Suppose I suddenly fell into about a half trillion dollars and purchased all 2 billion shares of Disney stock, and had tons of money left over to do what ever I wanted with the Disney parks and could keep attractions going for years and years...

Disregarding the "never finshed" and "always changing" arguments, I'd feel a responsibility to preserve Walt's legacy. Therefore, I would never close:

The Walt Disney World Railroad - guessing that when Walt first pulled out a pencil and a piece of paper during the "theme park as a wild and crazy dream" days, the first thing he drew was a railroad track.

It's a Small World, Carousel of Progress, Hall of Presidents, Pirates of the Caribbean. I've seen Walt so excited about these attractions (well, Lincoln more specifically than Hall) on DVD. I would want to preserve those forever.

Haunted Mansion - although it was probably in the "Museum of the Wierd" stage when Walt passed, it's an indelible spot of Disney history that shouldn't be eliminated.

Beyond those, I'd have a hard time shutting down Mr. Toad, Country Bears (keeping one each of those going), Jungle Cruise. And, finally, for personal reasons - the first attraction I thought was cool (back in 1979) Space Mountain would stay forever.

Just joined this forum. Happy to contribute.

The Walt legacies should be carefully considered before replacement or even renovated. IaSW is being renovated now and they better not make too many changes! Yes, it is hokey and very simplistic, but that's the best part. It is required reading as they say. No one should be allowed to go home without doing it at least once a visit. We were just there two weeks ago and really missed it. Can't wait to get back after it is re-opened. But if they mess it up and make it high tech and let the characters have two feet on the ground and move more than one appendage, they will have gone too far!!!

1. POTC
2. Haunted Mansion
3. Spaceship Earth
4. Boats running between Port Orleans Riverside and Marketplace
5. People Mover
6. Peter Pan
7. Snow White
8. CoP
9. Jungle Cruise
10. WDW Railroad

and, of course, the Monorails !!!

1) Carousel of Progress
2) The Great Movie Ride
3) The Haunted Mansion

As much as I dislike the ride, It's a Small World would probably have to stay.

For me Jungle Cruise, it was the 1st ride we did in 1989 we had no clue about any of the rides and were totally delighted with it,
I personally think removing the Haunted mansion would be sacrailige as this ride was way beyond its time and is still a marvel today.
I bet they are kicking themselves over closing the Nemo submarine ride it was great they could have updated it using everyones fave fish "Nemo" kids today would have had alot of fun going in a submarine and "finding Nemo"
Not sure about IASW only did it once and found it too cheesy but am sure it will stay.

In Epcot space ship earth is fab but could do with an update but in keeping with the original not a fast ride.

I think the countries could do with an addition maybe Australia or Egypt.

Just cruising through and thought I might put in my choices too! I have many favorites but limited it to my TOP picks.
COP
COP
COP
(did I mention COP??)
POC
Haunted Mansion
Spaceship Earth
Living with Land
Spectromagic Parade

I agree with others that not doing away with an attraction does not mean maintaining properly and upgrading as new technology is available. Hate to see them change original song/theme music but that doesn't mean they can't upgrade sound system. You can improve and enhance the experience without changing it to an entirely new one.

WDW should never lose it's magic. I think a big part of that magic is the memories and continuity generation to generation. My first trip was as a child at Disneyland. Can't explain how it was to share COP, POC etc with my son as a child and now his children too. I was surprised to hear my son (30) point out after our last trip to Orlando how amazing Universal is (and we wouldn't go to Orlando without going there too) but, Universal does not have the charm and heart of WDW. So true!!! ::yes::

Horizons and World of Motion should never have been removed. Epcot has never been the same since.

:charac2: :guilty: :scared1:

Hall of Presidents
Carousel of Progress
(both theatres need a revamp)

WDW Railroad
Haunted Mansion
Pirates of the Caribbean
Space Mountain

Along with many of the previously mentioned ones, I would have to add the Adventurer's Club. I think it could handle it's own weight outside of PI.

This is a very interesting exchange. My list of attractions I hope they never remove or replace goes like this;
Rocket Rods
Captain EO
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride (MK)
Dreamflight
The Skyway
Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland
Mike Fink Keel Boats
The Parking Lot (DL)
Mission To Mars
Motor Boat Cruise
Light Magic

and at the other parks...
Superstar Limo.
The Boat Ride at Animal Kingdom
World of Motion

And I hope they never touch DL's Space Mountain. Oh, wait a minute, it's only been closed for almost 2 years.

exDS Vet -
Did you ever ride Superstar Limo? I haven't ever seen such an awful ride at a Disney park. I know you were just listing rides that had been closed, but honestly Superstar Limo is better as a storage shed than as a ride.

Also, Space Mountain at DL is being refurbished and is supposed to be open in time for the 50th Anniversary, and I'm not sure that refurbishment should be counted as closing the ride - after all the Matterhorn has been closed for refurbishment for almost a year and it didn't make your list. :smooth:

Just my opinion.

Believe it or not, I actually rode Superstar Limo three times over three different trips to DCA when it opened. I couldn't resist forcing my guests to ride it just so I could see their reaction.

This was an awful ride that should have never been built. I heard at one time that it was Eisner's favorite in the park, but I couldn't believe that. Those horrible charactures of Regis, Whoopie, Tim Allen, et. all. resembled cardboard cut-outs, and nothing more.

To me, the Space Mountain thing is just stupid. When the Matterhorn was refurbished in the 70's it didn't even take as long as this thing will have taken by the time the ride opens back up. It could be a total of 2 1/2 years dark when all is said and done. And for what? Just a new duplicate track and some special effects? For the amount of time that the ride has been lost to guests, they should have re-imagineered the whole thing and made it like the Paris version.

The same holds true for It's A Small World at WDW. A year is too long for the "improvements" that they are making. For that length of down time, they should have torn down the entire front of the building and built a facade like the one at Disneyland.

These extended refurbs are all about money and saving it. If there was any kind of a sense of urgency, Disney would spare no expense to ensure minimal down time during these refurbs, and not one to two years or longer. I'd like to know if they have two or even three shifts working on these attractions, or if it is just a 9 to 5 operation. Furthermore, I'd like to know how it worked in the past.

When Fantasyland was rebuilt in 1982/83 they closed most of the entire land and when it re-opened, it was truly something special. The same can't be said for the Tomorrowland refurb in the 90's which I believe took much longer. Two of the original three "new" attractions are gone, "Innovations" opened late, and the Autopia's refurb came much later. Someone needs to get their priorities straight. When they re-imagineered Tomorrowland, they should have done Autopia and Space Mtn. at the same time.

Just my thoughts.
