What "reward" does DVC give owners for successful referrals?

I remember some discussion a few months ago about some sort of reward which DVC gives members for referrals -- extra one-time points maybe?? We've done the looking ourselves (with some help from this and a couple of other boards) but can't specially say that we were referred by one particular individual. We are very seriously looking at buying very soon, however, and it seems a waste on our end to not somehow claim this "reward" since DVC anticipates paying it. Can anyone provide any current info? Thanks!

I'm not sure about the denomination but the reward is a cash incentive. Some states have laws that do not allow residents to accept these rewards. CT is one of them so I can't give you the "levels".

Once someone has made contact with DVC then the chance of a incentive is over. They will usually ask "did anyone tell you about DVC" when someone first calls. That is the time that a name has to be given.

It sounds as if you are looking to get the "reward" yourself in place of someone having referred you. Unfortunately, DVC won't honor that. They do not always pay someone for a referral -- see above.

We have referred 3 friends so far, and each time we received 200 disney dollars. You could choose to have it used towards your dues, but we chose the Disney dollars. If you have more than one in a year, it increases for each one. We split the Disney Dollars with the friends that bought. Last year, we gave the Dollars to the kids for DisneyQuest. We have friends that just closed and told them they were getting half of our Disney Dollars, and they said it wasn't necessary, but hey we're friends.

I'm not sure if your' question is,

Are you entitled to get the referral bonus that members get, if noone "officially" referred you?

No

If you had a friend that was a member that you told the guide when you previewed DVC, he referred you, and they decided to split it or give it all to you, more power to you.

In our numerous add-ons, we've found that the only negotiation we ever really won on was when we were staying at the BW the first year at a very low price, we couldn't get the room for that price for the next night, but when we said if we bought............
we got the rooms, for still a price. Nothing free. I wish we got in on the old free tix for buying at okw back then. Now that was an incentive, haven't seen anything since.

I would think the referal status is determined at your first contact with DVC. If someone truly referred you or you told them INITIALLY that you were referred, the member should get something. In some states it's just a thank you as it's a violation of the law to give kickbacks in those states. Otherwise it's $200 in Disney $$or $200 credit toward maint fees are the ones I remember. Those apply to the first one per contract per year, it goes down for subsequent ones. I have $200 in Disney Dollars sitting in there on my dresser right now. I need to take them to the Disney store and trade them for real cash but haven't gotten around to it.

You have no claim to that reward though you and a member could strike up a deal to split it or whatever. Unlike with Marriott, you cannot "refer" yourself and collect the bonus. With Marriott it's usually 40,000 points for each week for a referal. A member can "refer themselves" and collect that but I think you have to be a member first. I remember a heated discussion on another BBS where someone referred another to Marriott and the second person bought 5 weeks. Things were arranged so the referring member got one referal and the buyer got the other 4. Apparently the agent suggested this. I can see both sides but it was very interesting.

I can confirm some of the above.

The referral reward definitely differs by state, because our guide looked it up so we could tell our friends what they would get.

We live in MD, as do our friends, and they were offered Disney Dollars or credit towards their annual dues. They took the latter.

My friend also told me that a few years earlier they were the referral for another person, and that time they received a litho.

We had made sure to mention our friend's name the very first time we walked up to one of those kiosks and asked for a tour.

I live in CT too, and I got a nice letter from my sales rep when I referred someone to him who bought.
It was a really nice letter. But the $200 would have been much nicer. Peggie

I have a very persuasive DVC friend who has made something like 7 or 8 successful referrals, of which I am one. I told her she oughta become a DVC guide when she retires. Unfortunately, Michigan is one of the states that does not allow monetary rewards for referrals. She would have made a real killing in Disney dollars! :p
