*** Warning - long post ***
I use PhotoImpact 13, Paint Shop Pro X4 and Photoshop Elements 10 to design and produce invitations, flyers and other printed materials. I haven't tried GIMP yet, but have friends who love it.
It is very important that you have the image copyright owner's permission to use an image and that you follow the terms of use, which tell you what you can and can't do with an image. You purchase the license to use an image according to the copyright holder's terms of use, and not that image itself. The originator, designer, or owner holds the copyright. When I design for my clients, I only use images I designed from scratch or images that I have a commercial license to use, following the designer's terms of use. I also license others to use my copyrighted designs and expect them to follow my terms of use.
Disney is very lenient with us using their images in DISigns for our
personal use. And I have used some of the DISigns found on this forum on t-shirts, invitations, candy bar wrappers and bags for my family for our
personal use only. This is how our wonderful DISigners are able to share such wonderful DISigns with us.
If Disney found you using their images on invitations (or anything else) that you sold to your clients without the proper licensing agreement, they can and will come after you for copyright violations. Others who will come after you for using their copyrighted images without a proper licensing agreement include the other movie studios, professional and collegiate teams, game and toy companies and others. Just because you found an image on the internet does not mean you can use it in your business.
If you used a DISign from one of the DISigners on invitations that you personalized and printed for your client, you would also be violating the DISigner's terms of use, as it plainly states in the stickies at the top of this forum that these DISigns are for your
personal use only and not to be sold or used for commercial use in
any way. Please respect this.
DISigning is a great way to learn how to use whatever software you decide to use. Please remember that is no charge for DISigns on DISBoards. I don't use Disney images in anything I've shared here on the forums, but I can and have shared non-Disney DISigns from time to time with DISers for their personal use. It's fun and I enjoy doing it when I have the time!
Feel free to PM me with questions.
