What price (literally) can you put on your trip?

In an earlier post, I mentioned I was called for Jury Duty in January one week prior to leaving for the World. I sent a letter with a copy of my reservation confirm but of course, it indicates no monetary value. And, to boot, we are driving so I have no airline confirm to produce. If asked by the courts, what price would I put on this vacation? It has me a little stumped. Do I give them the cash value of the room? Or the price of what the points cost me in dues? This is our first trip home after buying in July and we may be in danger of losing these points if we can't go in January.

You could always go to the regular WDW website and price "room only". See what the "cash" price would be if you were paying out of pocket for whatever size "deluxe villa" you're staying in and at the time you are going. Print the info so at least you'll have something that corresponds with the dates/type of room on DVC confirmation letter that you do have. Technically, that's what the accomodations are worth, right? Just a thought.

I don't know what the right answer is. Guessing, I would agree with above poster.

I just wanted to say that I hope this all works out for your vacation!:thumbsup2

I thought that you can postpone Jury Duty for 6 months, one time, without needing to give a reason. At least that is the case in California. In general, stating that you have a planned vacation is usually enough to get you excused.

In New Mexico you put down previous plans in the Jury Questionaire you fill out before you report. Everyone I know who had a trip planned was postponed for 6 months. Have you called to ask about this? I can't imagine they'd make you cancel a scheduled trip.
As for value I'd use rack rate.

That's not the case in Texas--in fact, it varies by county.

Hopefully you put your vacation on your questionnaire, but the questionnaires differ by county in PA. In Montgomery county (outside Philly), they ask the vacation question in the Marshalling room when you report for Jury Duty. Since it's a one day/one trial system in PA, that will count as your jury duty for this time, til your name comes up again. Hope that helps. I've even been in the Marshalling Room when they asked the question ...if you have a trip to Disney planned, etc.:)

if they ask what it cost you - then value your points at least $12 a point. that is what it will cost you to rerent from the DVC rental/trade board - if you have to postphone and can't cancel and rebook(I think you say it was a use year problem)

Jefferson County and the Fed don't always let someone go just because of vacations.

but they definitely overbook. because of that lots of people aren't even chosen for a jury to even be eliminated.

I would go with rack rate. I would also include gas expense.

I was called for Federal jury duty in Phila last Oct '06. There were a lot of people giving excuses as to why they couldn't serve. A lot of them stated financial hardship. One person did say that they had an upcoming cruise planned and they were excused. Me, of course, was a goody two shoe and got picked for trial.

Good luck!

I agree with the other posts. I'd go with rack rate. Just because you purchased DVC doesn't mean that the value is any less than what it would be if you were traveling down and paying cash. Believe me, we went several times and paid rack rates to stay in a 1-BR. IMHO, that's what your ressie is worth and easy to document.

I really wish you luck and hope all works out to your advantage!!! :goodvibes

Another vote for rack rate...if they ask.

Hopefully you will be excused...at least for 6 months.

Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly, but if they don't ask until after you've reported for duty, why bother to ask at all?

Showing up counts that you've done your duty. Asking (and getting the yes I'm on vacation in the next X number of days) eliminates you from serving on a jury. If both of those things happen, then your name doesn't come up until MAYBE the next round. It's supposedly random every so many years.

I was called to "grand jury" duty twice before in years past. I think this was 2002 and 2003. If my memory serves me correct, the paper stated I would be 'on call' for jury duty for at least 6 months. (holy smokes batman...)

I informed the court that I was a single mother (at the time) and I had younger children. I got out of it on the first try ok with that but the 2nd time I had to come up with something different but they did accept it.

I see no reason why they would want a monetary value of your trip. If you've proven via paperwork that this has been planned for quite some time, that should be all they need.

best of luck to you,
Esmerelda

FlyerFan - Has the court system asked for a value? I just served 4 days before we left for WDW and I had my DVC confirmation papers with me showing our arrival dates plus I also had airline reservation papers. Anyway they told me the judge would just want to see the dates of the vacation and excuse me from any trial that would run into my vacation if I were selected.

I was called up for a trial, but not selected. Hooray!!! It turned out to be just an afternoon trial anyway.
