I think the best thing that happened from this is that they released his name, and now the whole country knows what a JERK MATT STARR really is . . .

Don't mean to be argumentative here, but you should better hope you don't have to 'get past' either my dh or ds on your way to that ball!!!! Manners rule, not being roughed up by adults. Nice things to teach your child!!! The end does not justify the means! It's no wonder kids sports has become what it has.

I have to believe that spagheddie was being facetious.

I saw this footage on ESPN...this guy really screwed up.

1. The fans were chanting at him
2. the commentator at the game called him a jerk
3. the commentators at ESPN replayed everything and called him a jerk.
4. Now this newspaper has printed his name (and the guy's face has been all over TV). The whole world knows what a jerk he is.

All for a stupid baseball. What a moron! I hope this follows him around for a very long time.

That little kid is so cute too. I absolutely loved seeing the players come out and give him multiple baseballs and bats too. And now he has Mets tickets? Good for him!

I'm not a complete heathen. I know there is a line not to be crossed. If the kid had the ball firmly in both hands, I'd say nice job and wait for the next one to come by. If he was reaching for it or only had it in one hand I would no doubt trip him/her (gotta be fair) knock 'em over, or grab their arm and shake it loose.

Unfortunately, in today's world, catching foul balls is serious business. Don't even get me started on home run balls!

Oh big deal! He's being made out to be some kind of evil being. He caught a ball and kept it. Big whoop! You may think he molested or beat up the kid the way people are carrying on. And you just know that the kid's parents are going to milk this story for everything its worth.

The kid made out BETTER than him by getting all those freebies that he NEVER would of gotten if it were not for this guy. The kid should be thanking him!

This story is NOT newsworthy. Doesn't the media have more important things to report about, like, gee I dunno- our guys getting killed in Iraq??

Gimme a break!

I just took my soon to be 2 yr old DS to his first Phillies game and told him that if a ball came near us it's every man for himself. I been going to games too darn long to not have caught a foul ball and if one came near me, well I'll do anything that it takes. If he happens to get a little roughed up so be it.

Aha! Somebody who "gets it"! I totally agree, especially as a Philadelphia sports fan- you know we Philly sports fans are a tough breed! LOL

An official major league baseball goes for between $15 and $20. I'm sure one can find a game used foul ball on eBay for $5-$10. I mean, is it really worth it to push people out of the way if one want one that desparately?

This post is so typical of people's 'me first' attitudes, I don't know how to respond.

So the fact that the Rangers and Cardinals decided to make the kid feel better becuase of some jerk, makes it all right for the jerk to run him over in the first place? He didn't just catch the ball. read the story, he ran over a little kid in order to catch that ball. Thank goodness the kid wasn't hurt. You really have you priorities mixed up.

Did you see any of the video??? Did you see the child pushed and knocked around? He did not simply catch the ball, he nearly knocked a little boy down to get to it.

It would be wrong if he had knocked down another adult too. I wonder what your take on that would be, if there had not been a child involved.

Sheesh.

And it is newsworthy, because the media decided it was.

What if had been a cat that was shoved out of the way? Would you have a different reaction to this story??? ;)

I suspect that this behavior is common at the ballparks but this one caught the media's attention because #1 it was caught on camera and #2 the players, sportcasters and fans in the stadium had very vocal reactions to it. The man was wrong and I am glad to see most of the public reacting the way they are towards him. Perhap it will prevent a few over zealous fans from repeating that behavior.

Amen! As a Philly sports fan I'm sure this will make you feel warm and fuzzy.

On Monday, I heard Rudy Guliani on a NY radio show and he mentioned that after 9/11 everywhere he went people were so nice to him. And at sporting events even fans from other teams would be real positive. Rudy went on to say that Philly though never let up.
He took his son to the Eagles/Giants game in December 3 months removed from 9/11 and couldn't believe how many fights there were even though the Eagles won. As him and his son left the Vet, Eagles fans would still yell at him, "Hey Rudy, go back to New York, you bum!".

It's the thrill of the chase. I've never caught a foul ball, but imagine proudly holding a foul ball aloft with your foot on the chest of the person you just knocked down. That type of glory you can't buy on ebay.

Or infamy, in the case of this guy. The reason he left early is because he didn't want to get his butt kicked, believe me.

I saw the footage, the guy practically jumped on top of the kid in a fairly empty part of the stands. He fell over into their row and knocked the 4 year old boy out of the way. Absolutely everyone who saw it and commented on it later thought the guy was utterly out of line and he was. There's no debate.

And who the duece CARES about getting a baseball? Everyone knows football is the clearly superior sport. ;)

Yeah, the ball landed right by the mother's feet. The man had to fall forward from his row behind to the mom and son's row, knocking her son over to get it. She kept hitting him on the back with what was in her hands...a cardboard or magazine or something; her hands were full, and then on his way back up, he knocked the boy over again pinning him between himself and the seat in front of the boy. Let me tell you if this happened to us, there would have been a fight. I just couldn't sit back and let someone push my 4 year old around like that and invade our row and seats like that. If my DH was there, he'd be in jail for beating the you know what out of him. I felt so bad for that mom and son. It was sickening how selfish and stupid that man was.

When even his girlfriend was shown looking thoroughly disgusted at him while he's sitting there smugly, you know he's a jerk!

I hope she breaks up with him. She deserves better!
