What NOT to pack?

I have wide feet so I had to ask what type of shoes i needed to get so that i could order my shoes before i came When i say wide I mean like a 2 to 4 E wide LOL so you know the dont make cute shoes for wide feet

I'm going to have so much trouble fitting everything I want to bring into my tiny little car... Thanks for the above list, I'm definitely going to buy a new pillow and comforter when I get there and just bring my sham.

Does anyone know how strict they are about decorations? Like, are we allowed to at least tape things to walls?

I had my walls covered in Jonas Brothers, and was marked off for it every time during inspection, but did they make me take them down? no :) as long as everything else in your apt. is good, the one thing off won't matter. At least when I was there. Things could have changed. I think the only legal thing to hang on the walls is a dry erase board, which i totally recommend so that you and your roommie could share schedules and notes.

Reading this thread has made me worry that maybe I'm more high maintenance than I realize.

I packed a ton for my CP's. Although I did drive down there which meant I had more freedom when it came to packing than if I had flown. I brought sheets and towels and all of those kinds of things with me, IDK about everyone else but for me it would have been a huge waste of money to buy them instead of just bringing what I already had. I mean obviously if you're flying I can understand why you wouldn't bring them, but if you're able to drive and have the room you should because there are a lot of other things you'll be spending your money on.

I also brought some kitchen stuff like a George Foreman grill and a toaster. Potholders, dishrags, etc. I brought a tv because once again, since I was driving I had the room whereas I knew there was a good chance my roommates wouldn't be able to bring one.

I used big Rubbermaid stackable drawers in my bedroom for clothes, although the closets are pretty big, you just don't have much drawer space. I'm into clothes so there was no way I went down there with just three pairs of shoes! I also don't like to do my laundry very often so having all my clothes meant I could put it off a lot longer.

This is just a different perspective, packing light has its benefits as well but some of us just aren't meant to be light packers! My roomies teased me some about all my junk, but you're not camping out for a week, you're living there for several months, if you don't bring it you'll end up having to buy it.

Oh no, you're so right. I did the same thing. Especially with the under the bed storage because there really isn't any drawer space. But that's the advantage of driving. I can't imagine the costs of buying a few things down here outweighting the price of mailing/ bringing all those extras down if you're flying.

My george foreman was the most useful thing I brought!

I agree with you. I'm high maintenance myself! I love shoes and clothes and can never survive on just three pairs of shoes and only plain t-shirts. The list above is okay for some people, but for me that would be a list if I was going away for a week or two and not six months (a year if my extension is accepted). I'm really girly, so I wear makeup where ever I go and always do a different hairstyle everyday. So, I'm going to bring a lot of makeup and hair products. I am also going to bring almost my whole closet full of clothes and shoes (only thing leaving behind is my heavy winter clothes)! I also love wearing cute jewelry, so I'm going to bring all of my jewelry as well. I love dressing up and and getting all dolled up, lol! In my last program, I had to fly to Florida, so I had to pack lightly (by my standards). I have a rule that I don't wear the same shirt twice a week, so since I didn't brought a lot of clothes, I'd always had trouble finding something to wear some days. And mixing and matching only goes so far before it starts to feel weird wearing the same shirt all the time (but with different accessories and clothes). I hate doing laundry too, so I try to put it off as much as I can.

Whenever I travel, I always pack heavily and use every single item that I bring. I'm bringing my car, so I'm going to pack it full of all of my things. I also think it's a waste of money if you buy things down there when you can just take it from home (unless you are flying, then of course you have no choice but to buy your stuff in Florida). I can just take my pillows, blankets, and anything else that I am already using at home. For people who are flying, if you don't want to leave your favorite pillow at home, you can just take it as a carry on and use it to sleep or rest against on the plane. They don't count that as a carry on bag. That's what I did my last two times and the plane ride was so comfortable resting against my pillow.

This thread is super helpful!

I'm flying down and I am a chronic over-packer, so only having 2 suitcases(YAY Southwest!), a carryon, and a laptop bag is causing me a little stress.. So I have a question for those of you who flew down/have more experience flying:

-If I have a purse/tote with my laptop in it, I know that I can still have a carry on, would I be able to have a pillow in addition to that?

-What are some items items that just weren't worth the trouble to fly with? And in your experience, what items that might not be so obvious were worth the trouble to squeeze into a checked baggage?

I guess the last question is a bit reduntant with the title of the thread, but I'm curious. I've never flown anywhere for longer than a week with my family, and pretty soon I'll have to pack 2 suitcases with 5 months of my life to fly to Orlando alone! It's so exciting, but a little overwhelming when I think about it like that!

Thanks for everyone's insightful responses so far, and thanks in advance for your answers!

Don't know if this helps but my roommate who flew down was big on mailing things. So if you know you want it, but it doesn't fit leave the box ready to be mailed and have your parents/friends mail it for you once you know your address.

I'm debating on whether or not to take my xbox 360 and TV, if nothing else just to have to watch movies occasionally. I'm driving down so I'll have more room. Anyone have any thoughts on bringing TV's, electronics, movies ect...

I'm bringing my TV and playstation! I'm bringing my car, so I can just stuff it in with the rest of my things. Last time, I had my mom shipped it to me and I just put it on top of my dresser in my room. Used it to watch my fave shows and movies while resting in bed after a long day at work. A lot of people will be bringing their TVs and game systems down. Almost everyone I knew in both my programs had at least one TV in their apartment, so you won't be alone.

I know there isn't a lot of space in the rooms, is there enough room to put like a 32 inch and a game system? I guess I could always just hook up the xbox when I need it....

Hmm, in my last room there was space between the side of the dresser and the wall, but you have to buy a table to put it on. My TV is a 22 inch and that is why I was able to fit it on the dresser. It covered some of the mirror but me and my roommate used the bathroom mirror most of the time, so we didn't care about that. If it's too big, you can just put it in the living room. If you want space for your TV in your room, than my advice is to go with Chatham because the biggest bedrooms are in that complex. I was in Patterson, which had the second biggest bedrooms (but, the biggest living rooms).

A TV might be a good idea if you want to watch a movie or if you're one of those people who falls asleep to the tv or something, but I don't think you'll need a game system. With the parks at your fingertips, who would rather play games?? Of everyone I've talked to, those who did bring some sort of game system only used it once or twice because they were always too busy or in the parks.

Yeah I probably wouldn't play any games on it, I just need it to play all my movies which are on an external hard drive. I don't know how much I would even use it for movies though :goodvibes

p.s. I looove the good vibes smiley :goodvibes

To save packing space, I would bring all of my DVDs in a large CD case, the kind that zips up. Or, I would bring my PS3 (or any game system) that would allow you to stream DVDs from netflix. 7 bucks a month for all the movies you want, and no wasted space!
