What NOT to do during the anthem..

Just wanted to say that I'm as American as they come, but "O Canada" may be the perfect anthem. I can't help but get a little misty whenever I hear it. Beautiful song.

See, I love the American anthem. I know it by heart and usually sing it every time I hear it. I learned it watching hockey lol

A few generations ago. I'm not that old, but in my youth respecting your elders was something everyone was taught to do. It saddens me, when I see parents allow their kids to disrespect their elders, especially their grandparents.

No... in your youth you were fortunate enough to be taught to respect your elders and because you were a child you assumed that your reality was everyone's reality.

Believe me when I say that some parents in EVERY generation have allowed their children to disrespect their elders. And there are no more of these parents today, than there were 30 years ago, or 100 years ago.

During the sixties. You know, a few generations ago... possibly even before you were born. The quote may be fake, but it hits on something that is undeniably true - every generation thinks its youth are disrespectful and lacking in morals. Not a single one ever looks back and goes, "You know what? Kids these days are so much more moral and respectful than they were when I was young. Parents really are doing something right for a change!"

(Well, I actually say that a lot about my own kids, but I was a terrible child.)

Is the Russian anthem the same as the old Soviet anthem? I liked that, after hearing it so often during the Olympics.

I think Americans, as a whole, take all of their patriotic trappings much more seriously. The Canadian national anthem (as you will notice on its Wikipedia page) has been altered many, many times.

On Canada Day you'll see Canadians walking around wearing the Canadian flag as a cape. I can't imagine an American doing that to their flag!

ReclaimAustralian and UPF have made me too embarrassed to even fly my flag, Americans would be horrified to see them in action at rallies.

Actually, the Tenors are Canadian (they even used to be called The Canadian Tenors). They all hold Canadian citizenship, though Remigio Pereira was born in the US. For some reason, I couldn't find anything suggesting he holds dual citizenship - maybe he renounced?

Not cool. The other 3 tenors say they didn't know he was going to do that. The fourth tenor was scheduled to come to my city and have his own concert. It's been cancelled. I'm not sure if it was the venue that cancelled or what. I think he's the least popular person in Canada today.

I absolutely believe them. You just have to watch the subtle double take the tall blonde guy next to him does, to know they didn't know anything about this.

Which makes his "firing" all the more appropriate. This wasn't just an ill-advised political stunt, it was incredibly unprofessional and a betrayal of his fellow performers.

He's going to have a tough time coming back from this!

I've seen an anthem modified by the singer before a baseball game. It was also a rather surprising person who did it. It was actually "LDS Day" where they coordinated with the local LDS Church for someone to sing the anthem, and one player who was a member of the church caught the ceremonial first pitch tossed by a representative of the church.

The irony was that it was a common flippant modification of the anthem that some people in the stands would use, that substituted the name of the team in the lyrics. However, I never expected that anyone brought on the field would do that while miked up.

That being said, I've worked with Europeans. One asked me as an American, why is the national anthem played before any routine athletic contest. It seemed rather bizarre to them. They told me that perhaps it would be used for international competition, but not as something routine between two domestic teams.
