Today I learned!

I thought you guys had laws or something, preventing you from doing that sort of thing to your flag.

I do know that when some American protester came up to burn our flag on Parliament Hill, several decades ago, the RCMP officer on site gave them tips on how to do it safely and even offered them his lighter when theirs turned out to be nonfunctional. I think it took some of the wind out of their sails.

To be fair, many here see wearing the flag as disrespectful, but people still do it. And it's covered under freedom of speech.

Watched the game and when my fiance said what happened in the commercial break I thought he just used the gender neutral version. It took me far too long to realize what exactly had been done. He changed complete lyrics for his agenda. This isn't the first time someone has done a stunt like this. No others haven't changed the anthem but they have worn special warm up gear to get their point across. I get using your platform to further whatever side you are on but I am glad they try to keep it out of professional sports as much as they can.

It has been like that for as long as I've been around. Sometimes it gets more raunchy than others. I've never worn any of that kind of stuff.

The flag code does say you shouldn't wear it but people still do it. The code also says it shouldn't be hung from a podium or used as a backdrop but tons of political leaders do that. Mostly the military is who follows the flag code and those who grew up in families of those who served.

We do have a flag code. It does say not to wear the flag. But our flag code is voluntary. There are no legal consequences for breaking it.

(I remember someone accidentally dropping the Canadian flag during a ceremony and starting to panic until the sergeant said, "Just pick it up! We're not (expletive) Americans!" But he must have meant American military.)

Yep. I was a flag bearer for our high school as apart of NJROTC so had to know the flag code backwards and forwards. Nothing was a higher honor than getting to carry the American flag at the Friday night football game.

Well, yes, US code does say that it can't be used as clothing:

Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

But people do it anyway. In most cases, as long as the wearing of it isn't actually being done as a show of disrespect, most of us don't do much about it. In most cases people are wearing the flag as a show of pride.

Wadizit with San Diego and anthem controversies? Years ago there was Roseanne Barr butchering the US anthem. Earlier this season someone "accidentally" played a recording just when the gay men's chorus was about to begin. Now this.

And during my only visit to Petco Park a few years ago, the anthem singer they chose for the evening was embarrassingly awful.

Maybe they should just stick to recordings in San Diego.

Well, you do have that whole "Freedom of Speech" thing as one of your founding principles. I'm sure it creates regular headaches, when people are allowed to express themselves all willy-nilly like that.

Just wanted to say that I'm as American as they come, but "O Canada" may be the perfect anthem. I can't help but get a little misty whenever I hear it. Beautiful song.

A few generations ago. I'm not that old, but in my youth respecting your elders was something everyone was taught to do. It saddens me, when I see parents allow their kids to disrespect their elders, especially their grandparents.

Sorry, to go OT OP. Back to the Canadian Anthem.
