What movies out now are you excited about seeing?

Just saw Anna Karenina tonight. It was the WORST movie I've seen. I just don't understand why they did it the way they did. Way too distracting. I would have walked out but I was w/some others. None of us liked it.

I really want to see Silver Linings Playbook, but it's not showing around here yet. :(

Kind of dragged my daughter to go see Argo with me. By the end, she was practically gripping my arm, and she whispered in my ear, "They do make it out, right?" We both liked it a lot.
That happened with us and our dd too!

Les Miserables. That is all. Everything else has been white noise.

*drops mic* :cool1:

...and The Hobbit. I saw the premiere in NY last week (the arrivals, not the movie), and I got an official Gandalf hat. Loved the book, can't wait for the movie.

Finally saw "Hope Springs" over the weekend, it was good but not as good as I was expecting it to be with the actors that were in it.

Want to see Trouble With the Curve, Lincoln and Les Mis. We've seen Les Mis at the theater so I'm anxious to see the movie version.

I am REALLY looking forward to The Hobbit! But DH, not so much, unfortunately... :( I am pretty much in love with the LOTR trilogy, and really looking forward to another Middle Earth saga directed by Peter Jackson!

I also would like to see Django Unchained and Monster University.

Right now, I'm super stoked about Les Mis - though I know we'll see many others in the coming weeks, too.

Saw Skyfall, Lincoln, and Twilight in the last couple of weeks. Enjoyed all 3 but Lincoln was a true stand-out.

Recently rented Hope Springs (okay, but disappointing overall), Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (liked), Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (campy, but entertaining), Brave (cute, but not a standout for me), Magic Mike (awful!!!), Rock of Ages (loved- but loved the show more), 5 Year Engagement (cute), and Butter (loved!).

Want to see Trouble With the Curve,

This was one of those movies that I went into with zero expectations (had read TERRIBLE reviews) and came out pleasantly surprised. It's an old-fashioned, takes-its-time, relationship kind of movie. I really enjoyed it, and thought all three lead actors were very good.

I've been thinking about taking my parents to see Hitchcock.

Lincoln I will wait for Netflix or RedBox.

Already bought our tickets for The Hobbit.

Might see Les Miserables, but I'd end up going by myself.

I'm looking forward to Les Miserables and The Hobbit.

Guillermo del Toro has a horror film coming out in January and I'll probably see that if it looks interesting. I might check out All Superheroes Must Die and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters too.

My friend has a wonderful movie that came out December 7th, called Honor Flight. It's a wonderful, moving tribute and documentary about WWII veterans. Here's the trailer:

I am deeply grateful and indebted to these brave men, for they freed my family from the camps and I would not be here today if not for the brave men of the United States military. The greatest generation indeed.

Are there any other movies coming out? I wouldn't know!

Actually, I'm a little down about the Hobbit's release date. My son (the other big Hobbit fan in our house) starts his training for ski racing that weekend, and he'll be busy with that all winter -- early starts & late nights. I fear we might have to wait until spring to see it. Or hope for another mild winter.

I saw Lincoln and thought it was very good.
I thought Argo was fantastic though, much better than Lincoln. I was on the edge of my seat, filled with anxiety the whole movie, even though you know what happens. My favorite of the year.

Interesting. I passed on seeing Argo when I was invited as I can't stand Ben Affleck. But, seeing as how it's gotten so much awards buzz, I will have to see it now.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

Ooo! I didn't know this was finally coming out! :yay:
It's definitely on my must see list now. :cool1:

I posted this on another thread, but the subject deserves it's own discussion. popcorn:: :hyper2: popcorn::

Award season is coming up. :hyper: A friend is on the Sag Awards nominating committee so I got to see more movies with then than I normally go to. Of the ones I got to watch these are my favorite in order:

Zero Dark Thirty - this will be the one to beat at the Oscars. I really, really wanted to see this one. It isn't out in the theatres yet. It's sweeping all the awards. It got New York Film Critics Circle, National Board of Review, Boston Film Critics and New York Online Critics as the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association awards for Best Film, with Kathryn Bigelow as Best Director.

It's the 10 year long hunt for Osama Bin Laden, but it's not in normal, dry documentary format. It follows the one woman on the CIA whose tenacity was responsible for finding Bin Laden & bringing him down. To me, because of the subject matter, it is one of the most important, current movies out and every American should see it. There is some extreme violence during the first 30 minutes showing what it took to get information, (think Abu Ghraib,) but as an American & a NYer, I am proud of the movie. I also thought the film handled the Seal Team 6's take down of Bin Laden well, without being needlessly gratuitous, doing something to inflame our enemies who will be incensed & inflamed anyway. How accurate & close to the truth, remains to be seen as most of the info is supposed to be classified. :ssst:

Lincoln - maybe I'm just in a patriotic mood, but I really liked this film. Daniel Day Lewis was excellent, and should get all the awards for Best Actor (IMO). Sally Field should be nominated for Best Supporting actress. The film made me misty-eyed at the end and proud (again) of being an American. :yay:

Les Miserable - comes in third. But, that's because of Russell Crowe's weak singing, and I prefer the Broadway interpretation to how Hugh Jackman played the lead. Yet, Anne Hathaway will squeeze out Sally Field and win the Best Supporting Actress Award. I do think the tight cast should win for Best Ensemble.

Silver Linings Playbook - rounds out my top picks. I hated the description of the film and almost didn't see it. But, it turned out to be such a "feel good" movie. :cloud9: I actually liked it a lot. :thumbsup2 Best acting by Robert DeNiro in decades. To me, Jennifer Lawrence edges out Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty,) for the win for Best Actress.

Another film I liked is Hitchcock. It isn't really about the making of Psycho so much as it is about the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock & his wife, who was instrumental in getting the film made. I loved Helen Mirren. :thumbsup2

A couple films I am so-so about are The Impossible. It started out as a great movie, then fell flat and almost unbelievable, even though it was based on a true story of some of the Thailand tsunami survivors.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, was nice, but I felt I need to be in my 60's

to really appreciate the nuances of aging.

I couldn't get into Cloud Atlas, or Anna Karenina. :confused3

What movies have been your favorites, duds or can't wait to see? popcorn::

Lucky you, getting to see the films before they are released. We are planning to see Zero Dark Thirty though it isn't our usual fare. Haven't made it to Lincoln yet, but it is on the list.

Argo and Silver Linings Playbook are my favorites so far. We liked Skyfall, and Life of Pi was pretty wonderful. Not in a hurry to see Hobbit or Les Mis, but will see both eventually.

Jennifer Lawrence was amazing in SLP. I don't know if she will win, but that movie was sort of insufferable until she came on the screen. And I really hope Ben wins something for Argo, that was really an accomplishment. I did not expect to be as entertained by that movie.

I pretty much find something to like in most movies, just love movies. Saw Breaking Dawn 2 and was delighted to see Lee Pace. Liked Magic Mike because I love to see Channing dance. Was charmed by Andrew and Emma in Spiderman. Just don't like the ones that make me jump or wish I had ear plugs.

The SAG Award nominations have been announced:

On my personal unofficial nomination list I picked almost all the same people. The only differences were that I haven't seen Skyfall, The Paperboy, or Argo yet. And while Naomi Watts was great in the first hour of The Impossible, the last part of the movie, she really wasn't in it enough and the director directed her in such a way that it was hard to see her act when she was on.

I also wouldn't have chosen Denzel Washington. He gave a great, solid performance. But, it was his usual fare. (In my opinion. :))

The full list, including the nominees for TV shows are here:

Betty White was nominated for Hot in Cleveland. Go Betty! :thumbsup2 :cheer2: And a couple actresses were nominated for Downton Abbey.

Remember, we always have great, live, award show threads in Jan through Feb. 24, ending with the Academy Awards. :woohoo: :yay: :dance3: :cheer2:
