What movies do we need to see to best understand theming?

With all the new stuff why has no one said frozen? :rotfl2: But seriously from what I remember this list is pretty close .... Tangled for some of the parts of new fantasy land .... No rides but theming

The OP stated they had watched all the recent movies although they didn't say how recent.

I did the attraction both before and after I saw the movie: definitely appreciatd it more afterwards.

Definitely not recent, but you can watch the old Chip 'n Dale cartoons if you plan on seeing them.

We had an exchange student come to live with us in August, and had a trip planned for October.
We had to think of the most important movies she needed to see based on our plans for our trip.
She had seen Frozen and Pirates, but not a lot else.
We started with Toy Story, then Beauty and the Beast, and Finding Nemo.
She was familiar with the Cincerella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty stories, so we skipped those (time constraints mostly). Given our plans these were the most beneficial.
Maybe it would be beneficial to think of your plans, especially for the movies that would have limited usefulness in the context of the parks as a whole. As some ohters stated, Lady and the Tramp is useful if you're going to Tony's, but not much else (fun topiaries at flower and garden show). If you know some of the stories, it's not necessary to see ALL the movies. Don't shoot me, but there is only so much time one can spend watching Disney movies in order to "catch up" .

Robin Hood
Black Cauldron
The Rescuers
Great Mouse Detective
Home on the Range
20,000 Leagues under the Sea
Black Hole
Tron
Meet the Robertsons
Chicken Little
Bug's Life
The Gnomemobile
Herbie Saves the Day
The Shaggy DA
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes
...

Oh wait... Nevermind! :thumbsup2

The Swiss family Robinson treehouse is a way better attraction if you've seen the movie. And the movie holds up well after all these years.

TOTALLY agree. We absolutely loved the movie and going through the tree house is really moving once you've seen the movie. It would greatly sadden me if it was removed or rethemed.

We are in the process of showing all the relevant movies to my 4 y/o grandson, about to take his first trip, my 10 y/o is enjoying seeing them all again - we did this before his first trip at age 4. We are having to see three a week to get them all in (a lot are on Netflix right now) before our Christmas trip.

I better do beauty/beast since I'm stalking a rez. lumiere, potts, and gaston will probably make sense then. don't even know what the rose means. shame on me :guilty:

Yeah, I'd say you better get right on that! Lol. It's a fantastic movie!

Grounds for removal from the boards? Anyone? :rotfl2:
:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Great thread:thumbsup2

Agreed! This is a wonderful discussion!

With all the new stuff why has no one said frozen? :rotfl2:

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

geez. now I have to add Avatar. :rolleyes2

I LOVE Avatar!

you don't have to see any of them, most tell the story through the ride. POTC movies were created from the ride and I assume a lot of people have never seen Song of The South (Splash Mountain). If you've never seen Mermaid, the ride tells you everything you need to know. Enchanted Tells With Belle.... got you covered. Peter Pan, Nemo and Friends, etc.

I agree. I don't remember anyone asking something like this before. :goodvibes

Thanks! It has turned into a fun discussion!

We watched Sword in the Stone last night. None of us had seen it, and yet so many of the images from the film were very familiar. I am positive that I have seen some of the cels, and artwork from it, and I remember the sword in the stone right outside the carousel at DL. Would have meant so much more after the movie!

We have seen Frozen, Finding Nemo (at least a bajillion times, lol), The Little Mermaid, all of the Toy Story movies, The Lion King, Pirates, Tron, Dumbo, Wreck-It Ralph, the first Planes movie, both Cars movies, various Muppets movies, the Monsters Inc movies, Up, Wall-E, Enchanted, Ratatouille, Meet the Robinsons, The Incredibles, Lilo & Stitch, The Emperor's New Groove, Mary Poppins, Mulan, Cinderella, and Big Hero 6. I guess we have seen more than I thought! Now, *I* have seen some others as well, but I don't think that the boys have, so I will add the ones that you guys have mentioned, if I can find all of them before then! Thanks so much for all of your input!

Just in case you don't have enough Disney movies to watch... ;)

There are the non-Disney movies for The Great Movie Ride:
Wizard of Oz
Singin in the Rain
Casablanca
Alien (be careful on this one, though),
the James Cagney, John Wayne, and 30's musical movies (somebody help me out on the names of these, OK? And what others have I missed? One of the Indiana Jones ones, I think)

Some non-Disney ones for you:

African Queen - it inspired the Jungle Cruise

For Great Movie Ride:
Footlight Parade
Mary Poppins
Public Enemy
The Searchers
Cat Ballou
Alien (original, but Aliens is good too)
Indy Jones (Raiders)
Any 1930/40s horror - I like the original Mummy
Original Tarzan with Jonny Weissmuller
Casablanca
Finally, Fantasia and Wizard of Oz!

And isn't there a movie that went with Tower of Terror?

::yes:: There was a made-for-TV movie released three years after the attraction opened at MGM/DHS, starring Steve Guttenberg, Kirsten Dunst and that little girl who played Cory's little sister on "Boy Meets World." If you look up "Tower of Terror movie", you can find the whole thing on Youtube. It's still a great watch for Halloween!

the James Cagney, John Wayne, and 30's musical movies (somebody help me out on the names of these, OK?

If I remember right, the John Wayne movie is "The Searchers" which was a pretty violent film for the era it was released. I'd caution against having kids watch it.

Has anyone yet suggested "Tom and Huck", or any other movie about the boys to know who a few of the names are on Tom Sawyer Island?

well isn't avatar where blue things skip around in a forest shooting arrows and not talking? maybe I can leave that one off because unless Disney is going to paint mickey blue, I don't see what the movie will have to do with AK.

what I really wish with all my heart is that the song Happy was from a Disney movie. how great would that have been.
