What makes a successful thread?

So I was just thinking, what do you think makes a successful thread?
I know this is probably a bit random but I just wondering..
'Cos sometimes you'll see a thread at the top of the forum and then the next thing you know it's gone down to the bottom of the page.
So what's your thoughts?

You have to know your audience. In this case, we all like topics that we can debate and share feelings.

You need to have the first post to be informative about the topic so we can understand and post on what you are saying.

I guess it depends on the type of thread like a game thread sometimes has to be original but not a repeated thread And sometimes a completely new game
