What lessons did you take as a child?

In Junior High and High School, I took acrobatics for 5 years, tap for 3 years, and jazz for one year.

Piano (I can still play Chopsticks!!)
Guitar - can't play a note

DD12 has taken voice, piano, guitar, violin and swimming lessons. She plays all of the instruments plus mandolin (self-taught) and recorder (she doesn't count that one though because it isn't a "real" instrument".

DD7 has asked to take piano too but we havent started that yet.

Piano-took lessons but more self taught
clarinet, sax and percussion-band through out all of school
Jazz/tap for five years, ballet on and off that whole time
Gymnastics for one year
Swimming-still certified to teach and lifeguard

I think that's all...nothing crazy.

Stupid question, what's a recorder????

Clarinet: I could read sheet music as well as a book. This was in 4th and 5th grade. Then I gave it up when I hit middle school, and now I not only can't play it, I can't read sheet music. I did however teach myself how to play "Midnight Special" by CCR on Clarinet for my Dad.

Chorus: 4th grade-9th grade. I gave it up in high school and now I'm almost tone deaf! It's true what they say. USe it or lose it!

Piano: NO formal lessons, but I played by ear and was fairly good at it. Again I could read sheet music and new all the keys. I taught myself how to play Mozart/Beethoven etc...

Horseback Riding: The only one that mattered. Rode from 9 years until now, competitively. I am now a professional riding instructor, stable manager and horse trainer. I own my own farm (24 acres, 4 horses of my own, 13 boarder horses). It was hunt seat equitation (English style, for the lay person...though I do whip out my western saddle on occassion), and I do jumpers and dressage now as well. So those lessons as a kid paid off!

Voice lessons: sing at weddings and funerals now so they came in handy, and the church choir.

Piano lessons: Hated every minute of it and boy my Mom was right. I am so glad I had them now.

Dance Lessons: Ballet, Tap, Jazz. I do Belly Dance now and the ballet helps with that.

Various Team Sports: I am too bad at sports to be any good to a team so now I do individual sports!

:thumbsup2 years of dance at Miss Nancy's....tap, ballet, toe, acrobatics.
baton lesson at the Y...only went a couple of times.
piano lessons at the the Y ....2-3 years .
swimming lessons at the Y loved to swim...

dd12 list..... :scratchin she's been in track, jfl cheerleader, skating....since kindergarten off and on....one year on the syncro. team, and now were into the second year of competition.......

oh i forgot to add.....i started skating lesson's a year ago ! now dd12 and I compete in the family spotlight at competions....it's been a blast !

My parents couldn't afford any lessons for us. We were taught hula for free by a famous Hawaiian entertainer at a local YMCA. That's it.

I did learn how to properly swim in high school and I love it now.

Swim lessons in grade school (I still love the pool!) Hawaiian dance lessons in Pre-K, ballet, tap, jazz in grade school, (I still love to dance), and karate (I got bored really fast with that and I quit within weeks.)

Gymnastics for 12 years...could actually do a back flip on the beam and now I can barely walk down the hall with out tripping :rotfl: !
Clarinet....all through Elem. and High School.
Tennis...from 6 till all through Shippensburg University....still play!!!

dance lessons (tap/ballet/jazz) - 10yrs. The tap was useful in high school for musicals but honestly I have horrible posture and no rhythm so they weren't terribly useful

swimming lessons - don't recall how many years. pretty useful as I can swim quite well and it helped my asthma

art lessons - 1yr. I can't draw. they didn't help at all

tennis - 6yrs. I played throughout high school and was one of the top ranked doubles players in my division so I guess they worked out well

baton - 4yrs. I can still twirl pretty well

I took

tap, jazz, ballet for 10 years
pointe and baton for 3 years
piano for 3 years

I can kinda read music but couldn't play a song on the piano if my life depended on it.

I'm not very graceful but I can dance!!! :dancer:

I took art lessons for a bit but that's all. My dad was an art major in college and had been teaching us since we were tiny. Since I was the only one that showed any aptitude, I was signed up for art lessons. When I came home and told my dad they'd had us copying famous paintings, he took me out. I'd actually learned a lot more from my dad then I ever learned in any art classes I ever took. We always had the coolest art supplies, too. :teeth:

Sadly, I've never enjoyed drawing and painting that much although I CAN do it--I just don't do it for fun. I'm more of an artsy-craftsy kind of person which drove my dad crazy. :teeth: I like to sew, knit, crochet, scrapbook--that kind of thing.

Ballroom Dance Lessons for 3 years - Unfortunately, most men of my generation didn't take them, so I lost my knack.

Square Dancing - I've actually done this more (at least for longer periods of time in an evening) than Ballroom, so it wasn't a waste.

Guitar - I just didn't practice enough, so I didn't get very far.

Now, as an ADULT, I've taken lessons (paid for, and with a "pro") in a variety of areas with varying results.

Ski - terminal intermediate
Sailing- I can take over the helm, if I have to. I would hesitate to go out as the "lone" sailor
Tennis- I can't serve to save my life
Fencing- I haven't had an opportunity in decades, but I enjoyed it
Skeet- I'm a fair shot
Golf- I can think of better things to do with my time
Bridge- I'd rather play poker
Wind Surfing- I'd rather sail
Rowing- I can do it, but I'm not passionate about it (like DH)
Squash- Very few courts available; the one DH uses is not equipped for females (you have to go through the Men's locker room)
Horseback Riding- When my instructor (who owns the stables and had been riding since childhood, and teaching for about 15 years) was seriously injured by a horse, I decided to call it quits.

Driving Lessons- the best money I ever spent!

Swimming lessons- Very valuable and relevant to this day.

Karate in adolesence- Very valuable experience, especially positive mental training, during teen years.

I begged for voice lessons, but I was denied. At college, I paid for them myself and improved my musicianship and vocal technique. They are relevant now, as I continue to sing and hone my skills and broaden my musical experience.

gymnastics
piano
art classes at the museum of fine arts in boston
I think i got an appreciation for the arts
swimming at the Y
tennis at the country club

I took dance lessons (tap, ballet, and jazz) from about 4/5 year old up until I graduated from high school.

I took gymnastics for about a year or so, but it started conflicting with dance so my mom made me pick one and I chose dance.

I think I did swim lessons when I was really young.

I was in band from 5th grade through high school.

Advanced swimming lessons. Not only am I a great swimmer but my sister is lucky I paid attention in class.

Piano lessons, I can play one song.

Riding lessons, I owned 3 horses throughout my younger life and I was always wanting to improve. Scored a few ribbons at horse shows.
