What lenses for Canon user

Just curious what lenses all you Canon folks primarily use? I'm looking at getting the 70-200mm f/4.0, but also want a good wide lens to supplement this.

Thanks!!!

My two primary lens are the Canon 17-40 F4 and the Canon 70-200 F4 IS. These pretty much cover my needs. I also have the Canon 50mm F1.8 for low light use and the Canon 100mm F2.8 for Macro. The 17-40 is a good choice on the wider end, its the lens I use the most. If you have a little bigger budget consider the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS, this is an amazing lens, but a bit pricey.

My primary or "workhorse" lens is my 28-135IS lens. I love it and it is on my camera 95% of the time. Now for Christmas DH did surprise me with the 70-200 f/4.0 L lens and I really like it - but like you I don't think it is wide enough to become my primary or walk-around lens.

I have the 24-70 L f2.8 and it rarely leaves the camera! Its fantastic! Here's a few samples:

I can also reccommend the Sigma 18-200 OS for an all in 1 walk around lens! I took it on my last trip to WDW and it served me well!

a lot depends on your budget...right now i use my 28-135 IS canon as my walk around lens, i use my 70-200 f4 a lot, it's my fav. lens but like jen said not really wide enough for a walk around so i carry both normally. eventually i want to get something L quality to replace the 28-135 but that is low on the list since i'm happy with it for now.

not trying to get off topic - but Janet I am glad you finally got a good version of the 28-135 and you are happy with it. It really is a nice lens especially for the price.

It seems to me that I could probably do 95% of my shooting with three lenses:

1) Wide angle: Canon EFS 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 (got it)
2) Walk around: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L (need it)
3) Zoom: Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS (got it)

And you are covered from 10mm-200mm with some high quality glass.

My son dropped my 28-135 the other day (I left my bag unzipped on the table and he was moving it for my DW) and three lenses fell out. The only damage was to the UV filter on my 28-135. When I saw the crack in the glass, for a while there I thought I finally had my excuse to upgrade from the 28-135 to the 24-70.

you and me both:rotfl2: so far i haven't had any of the problems i had with the first copy and i've had it longer. my only problem so to speak with it is due to it being not quite as sharp i can't crop as much as i can with the 70-200 since i seem to always like those tight closeup deals......but i use something else if i think i want to do that...

the lens i use the least is my kit followed by my 50mm followed by my 10-17 which i really like but is really such a specialized lens i just don't use it much.

and i am loving my tamron 1.4 converter... as long as i use a tripod, i love it's results.and it was cheap!

Believe it or not, I use my 50mm f/1.4 as my walk-around now. It is crystal clear and gives me the shots I need while at Disney (yes, I use my legs to zoom in-and-out).

I also use my 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS as a walk-around when doing my favorite photography, animals. It also gives me some amazing shots when used properly (which I am still learning to do).

I seldom use the kit lens now and would like to get a wider piece of glass, but I'm happy right now.

That's my lineup, except for a 24-105 f/4 IS instead of the 24-70.
It's rare that I need anything longer than 200 and usually if I do I really need 600. I do have a Canon 1.4x extender for that little bit extra but don't use it much.

It's also rare that I need anything shorter than 10 unless I also want my feet in the photo! ;)

Well, a lot depends on what I'm shooting. I am a family portrait photographer, and primarily use the 85mm 1.8. For small spaces, I use the 35mm 2.0.

However, for family snapshots (Christmas, birthdays, etc.) or for vacations, I use the 28-135mm lens.

I'd like to begin by admitting my approach has not been the best conceived - as it was weighted in favor of conserving funds initially. But this is my recent PAST lens KIT, the current, and finally is MY curent "wish list" of lenses to gradually acquire:

Past - in order of ownership....

KIT 18-55 (still have - never carry or use)
Tamron 18-200 (bought used - sold - tack sharp when it achieved focus)
Canon 28-200 (bought used - sold - soft and low contrast)

Canon 28-35 f2.8 (bought used - inexpensive and serves OK )
Canon 28-135 IS (bought used - Usually mounted 80-85% of the time)
Canon 70-300 IS (bought new - my favorite lens - used only 10%% of the time)

Lenses I'd like to get next in order of priority:
Canon EF 24-70 f2.8 L or the older Canon 28-70 f2.8 L
Canon EF 70-200 IS f2.8 L
Canon EF 50 f1.4

For me it's a significant expense to step up from y 3 active lenses with maybe $1200-1300 tied up in them versus the 3 lenses I'd like to get which would run me over $3000-3500 more or less.

Now just you wait and see... in 90 days I'll change my mind and begin to covet an all PRIME line up of lenses! Then by year end it'l be back to here again!
