What languages do you speak or would you like to learn?

I took three years of French in high school and 15 hours of it in college--but MAN, I'm still not very good at the language.

I also took Russian in college, but then the Soviet Union broke apart and knowing Russian for American Security reasons became unimportant...

My family and I have all decided that we need to learn to speak Spanish as it becomes more common in the US. We'd love to know what other people think about Rosetta Stone.

I grew up hearing my grandparents all speak German and can understand a little of that. I took 3 years of Spanish in high school and thought I still remembered some of it. LOL not, I moved to Puerto Rico 3 years ago and the language thing was a nightmare. I can understand some of what people say but not very much. I can speak the basic please thank you and so on. It does not help that my DH and his family were all born in the states and speak English only to me. I have tried 3 different courses to teach myself but that ended up not working one bit. So now everyone just refers to me as the Americana or gringa and I just smile and speak English. I am thankful that most of the people here in San Juan speak at least some English.

I took Spanish and French in school. I can understand other people in Spanish but have a hard time remembering words or phrasing now. I did use it more when I lived in New Mexico than I do here in Michigan. I remember very little French.

I lived in Germany for a year when my ex was stationed there. Since I had never taken German before, all I ever learned was to speak "food." (See my tag?) Although, dd is taking German this year and I actually know a lot more basic German than I realized.

I can also speak a few (very few) polite phrases in Navajo. Don't ask me to spell them, though, I have no idea how to do that!

For those of us who speak Spanish but may be feeling a little rusty, there's always the option on tuning in to the Spanish language news. The Spanish spoken is always clear and easy to understand, just like our native English-speaking newscasters and their clear pronunciation. If you find that you can't keep up with that, try some of the children's programming! Sesame Street in Spanish is quite entertaining!

Took French and German in high school. Could probably follow some of it now, but definitely not speak it.

My kids are enrolled in a Spanish Immersion school. They have the first half of their day in Spanish and the second half in English (they are 3rd and 4th grade). This school only teaches in Spanish in K and 1st and you start to learn to read in English in school in 2nd grade.

These kids are going to be bilingual and biliterate by the end of 6th grade. I am working on the team right now to extend the charter from K-6 to K-12.

Can you imagine the opportunities a kid from high school can have coming out fluent in Spanish? I see so many ads in the paper advertising for bilingual applicants, and specifically in Spanish.

It's so cool when my kids talk to each other in Spanish. It's little stuff right now, but oh, the possibilities for them.

I can understand Spanish for the most part now, hearing it at school. Very similar to French, being a romance language. I'd love to learn it enough to speak it with my children.

English is my first language but I'm fluent in French. I've had several years of Spanish, and dabbled in Italian. Currently I'm in my third year of studying Russian. It is by far the hardest language I've studied yet!

My DD passed my proficiency level and is now more fluent than I am, which is a great thing...but she does not like to practice with her mom
