Spanish in middle/high school. French for two semesters in college (one before doing a semester abroad in France, one while there). German for one semester in college.

Spanish in high school. Spanish, French, and German in college. I might have tried Latin or Russian next, but I spent my senior year in Germany, where I tried Italian. That didn’t go well because I could understand the Italian but couldn’t say it in German to the professor!

I took Russian back in the 60s. I also took Latin, which was useful when I was assigned to teach Medical Terminology and I had little knowledge of it. While Russian was fun (my best friend was also in my class and when we wanted to talk to each other in front of my parents about something "private"-think teenaged girls-we annoyed my parents by speaking Russian). However, so many people where I live speak Spanish (in this area, you can survive speaking Spanish only your whole life), it would really help.

I took German for 4 years in High School. I was in EPCOT this past March and a woman in very halting English asked me about the ponchos as it was raining. She was from Austria and spoke little English, but I remembered a little of my German and we managed to communicate, although her English was much better than my German.
