What kind of Vinegar?

If a recipe just said "vinegar", I would use white vinegar.

If they want apple cider or balsamic or rice or whatever, they need to specify, IMHO.

"Regular" vinegar, to me, means cider vinegar. ::yes::

(Wonder if it's a regional thing?)

regular is white vinegar to me...

though the only time I use it is when dyeing eggs:goodvibes

I mostly use red vine vinegar!!

I'm 52 yrs. old and I have always considered cider vinegar to be "regular" vinegar. White vinegar is something we rarely used growing up except to clean. I use it more in cooking.

To me, and all of my family, and most of my friends here in Australia and New Zealand, regular vinegar would mean Malt Vinegar (and I assume most British people would think this too). Just another case of how similar, but how different we all are... :)

Regular vinegar to me is cider vinegar. I don't think I would ever use white vinegar unless a recipe specifically called it out. I do use it to clean my floors, however.

The recipe is for German Potato Salad.

When I just see the word vinegar I always think of white or distilled vinegar. He says "regular" vinegar is cider vinegar. My mom agreed with him. I thought maybe it was an older generation thing. :confused3

Reg. vinegar is white, you are correct. Now some people use cider vinegar, I am not one of those people.
I don't like it.

I only use white vinegar when it is all I have left. I typically only use it for cleaning/soaking things.

I use white wine vinegar for most recipes. It is pretty versatile :thumbsup2 .

Given that it was a recipe for German potato salad, I would have used cider vinegar b/c I have made it before and am familiar with the flavor profile. If it was a recipe for something I was unfamiliar with, my assumption would be white vinegar, but I'd still look over the other ingredients to see if red wine vinegar or cider vinegar would be a better match flavor-wise.

I'll have to tell my step-dad about that recipe. Thanks for posting it.

I don't like cider vinegar either. I think I may just use white vinegar in the recipe again, but cut it by half. I liked it the first time I made it, but it was just too vinegar-y. I'm afraid if I use cider I won't like it.

It depends on the recipe. If it doesn't specify, probably white vinegar. But for some things I'd use balsamic or even rice vinegar.

To me, "regular" vinegar is distilled white vinegar. Unless a recipe specified otherwise, that's what I'd use.
