What kind of child were YOU when you started kindergarten?

I went straight to first grade, also. I had 3 older brothers and couldn't WAIT to go to school! I spent most of the day puzzling over why those other kids were crying. When I finally heard one of them sobbing "mommy" I STILL was confused!!! I mean, I expected my Mom to be there when I got home...so what was the problem???:D :D :D

First day of kindegarten I was sent home with in two hours. I got into a fist fight with another boy on the playground, he got sent home too:rolleyes: Parents brought me back the next day and I had to apologize to the teachers:rolleyes:

I had short hair – a pixie cut. I hated it, and to this day I dread cutting my hair. I don’t think I was shy at that time, that came years later. I mostly played with the boys, because I was used to playing with my brother who was 2 years older. My teacher didn’t believe in giving children a pattern to make art projects, so I brought home a lot of ‘jewelry boxes’ made from egg cartons with bits of fabric glued to them. I loved to paint, and our kitchen was like an art gallery. My masterpiece was, “A Mouse Sitting on a Rock.” (I think I painted it first, and then made up what it was supposed to be.) The teacher had a musical instrument – I think it was some kind of harp. She used to play it and we would skip around in a circle. At the time, it was a lot of fun. It was a very happy time in my life.

I was pretty bright - the only one who could read before kindergarten - kind of a teachers helper and I would read to the other kids at story time - I think I was bored with the "work" I remember having a paper that said something like "color the square blue" so I did that and then went on to color the other shapes different colors - the teacher said it was wrong, but I insisted that it didn't tell me I couldn't do that so it wasn't wrong. My mom still has that paper!

I also remember teaching one girl how to tie her shoes - we went off to different schools and then went to the same middle school - she came up to me then and said - I remember you, you taught me to tie my shoes!

I enjoyed reading others posts!

I had a terrible speech problem and was teased a lot. I looked forward to going to kindergarten. At the time I was the youngest of three girls (younger brother and sister born when I was 7 and 14, respectively), so I was lonely at home when they were at school. I was teased the first day for my speech problem, and my insistence that the teacher call me by my nickname, Dutch. I wouldn't answer to Kelli. I don't think I was being difficult, I just never was called Kelli at all, just Dutch (I looked like the Dutchboy paint boy  ). The only person that calls me that now is my father whom I haven't seen for many, many years. The highlight of Kindergarten was when I went to see Mr. Mac for speech therapy. He was so nice to me and made me feel smart.

I was probably the most quiet kid to ever enter kindergarten. I was so shy, I didn't really talk to anyone except for my few friends. I also wasn't very independent. Whenever I had to get up to do something, someone would have to come with me because I couldn't do anything by myself.

I was also reading on my own when I started kindergarten.

One of the first grade teachers used to sometimes have me come read to her during recess. I remember her bragging to the other teachers how advanced my reading skills were.

I was not shy, and not the least bit quiet. In fact, I can remember my friend Cindy and I getting in trouble all the time for talking too much. We even got "the paddle" once, for talking in church.

Very, very chatty. Still am. :) Way more interested in socializing than I was in schoolwork, unless it was arts and crafts. Those habits continued throughout school.

I was shy but met my best friend on the first day of school. I could already read, so the "book nook" was my favorite part of the room. We made audiotape recordings during the year, and I remember my teacher asking me to count as high as I could, and then she cut me off at 101. :o I also remember pretending to fall asleep during "quiet time" at my desk so I wouldn't have to go sit down with the other kids after it. :)

I went to kindergarten with my cousin Karen and we were the leaders of that class. I just followed her and did everything she said to--kind of vice president or something. (She went on to be her Senior class President in HS) We led those girls around so they'd know what to play and what to wear. (We thought they needed us)

I couldn't skip and remembering learning to skip with Mrs. McFeely. We slipped going around the corner and she broke her glasses. I was mortified!

There was a boy who liked looking up girls dresses so I think holding our skirts down started early for that class of girls!

I had long hair down to my bottom that I wore in braids. I whispered during the naps and had to separated from my dear ol' cousin. I loved playing with those wooden blocks and the house center.

I think I was a happy kid in kindergarten. I remember my classroom had a special "Red area", everything was RED, they had these big fat red crayons and I was tired of fighting over those teeny tiny stubby red crayons in the coffee can on the desk so I waited till the teacher went outside and I was bad and ran to the red area and got a red crayon! I took a nice piece for myself and gave out the rest to whoever wanted it!
I got in trouble with my best friend when we went to the bathroom because we kept drinking water from the water fountain (still don't know why we were in trouble). I also remember hating root beer (still do) and my class had an end of the year picnic. My teacher (Miss Portnoy) was worried and asked my mom why I wasn't drinking anything, my mom said you must be only offering root beer (she was right). My teacher was so surprised.

I was kind of a split-personality child, I would be shy one moment, talking up a storm the next. On my first day of kindergarten, I don't really remember how I was feeling, but I remember when I walked into the classroom, I saw a boy crying, and I felt bad for him, so I sat next to him and started talking. Turns out he lived real close to me and we were best friends for several years and played together everyday.

I didn't have a good time at school and it started in kindergarden. I could read and count when I went in school and that ended up being bad. I was always in trouble because I really wanted to work and because I could read I could do the book without her. As well we would go to the library and of course I really wanted books that were at my level. But it seems that it was a school rule that you could only take out the books at your school level. I never did take out any books. I was very shy and didn't have any friends. I was not an only child I had 7 brothers and sisters so you would have thought I was really outgoing but I wasn't. I don't think it helped that I was really tiny with really long hair. in later years I was bullied so all in all school doesn't have good memories for me.

ROTFL!!!! Many of these replies are hilarious!

I remember my first day, most of the other kids were crying and vomiting. I couldn't really understand what that was all about, but the kids having difficulty adjusting seemed to get a lot of attention from the teacher. That's when I decided to stick my finger down my throat and force myself to vomit. In no time, the teacher was by my side.;) Isn't that terrible? Also did this when I wanted my mom to pick me up from school.

I hated kindergarten. I was very talkative and the teacher didn't appreciate it. I remember running away from class/school a few times. I would wait until the teacher was busy and just take off running to my house. We lived about 2 blocks away from the school. I don't remember much about academics, all I really remember doing was playing with grey modeling clay, singing & painting.

I can't believe I put my mom through all that!:( Just don't tell my kids!!!;)

curly hair, very reserved:D Also very upset when I didn't win the "longest pony-tail" contest. I don't use wax paper much now, but when I do, I am reminded that was how my snacks were wrapped from home. I also remember kids vomiting:(

I was very very shy, I remember cupping my hands when we had to clap so no one would hear me clapping. There was also a little bunny that we could take out of his cage and play with. That was 31 years ago and I still remember tons of stuff, even my teacher's name--Mrs. Davison.:D

Nancy 679- My teacher's name was Mrs. Davidson. LOL!!

I just turned 5 when I started kindergarden and went with my 'boy' friend from across the street. I was very shy and needed my friend for comfort. We walked to school together by ourselves, it was only 2 blocks. One time I started giving my Mom a hard time about going back, I would keep crying, until my Mom found out the teacher moved my friend's seat. She moved him back, next to me, and I never had another problem. There were 30 kids in our class and I remember having to bring a snack in a lunch box, which I thought was cool, and having to lay down for a nap. I also loved those fat crayons.
