I'm sick of AOL and looking and for opinions and I know of no better group to ask.

What ISP are you using and would you recommend it?

Mediacomm Cable.

Mediacomm is the company we have our Cable TV with and I am not sure if they are only in the midwest or if their service expands to other areas of the country. We have not had any problems with them.

We also have Mediacom Cable modem. Love the speed, but if the cable goes down like it sometimes does in rainy weather, our internet is down too.:(

AT&T Broadband Intenet (ATTBI). Love cable, rarely, almost never, a problem. Had AOL years ago (hated it), dropped them for two other local dialup ISP's, YNC and Voyager, before cable came here about 18 months ago.

I use Cablevision modem. Very fast and never have had a problem. Try your local cable company Mitch.

EARTHLINK or STAR TREK LINK!!! We have had Earthlink for about 2 1/2 years now. When I have had a problem I got help. Earthlink runs Star Trek Link and the prices are the same. We get 8 email addresses and a 10MB website for each address. They have a thing called Spaminator. It gets about 80 - 90% of spam. :TEETH: I got an email address to forward spam that does get through. They now have a program you can download to stop pop up windows. You can tell it to let pop ups from any site you want, like here on the DIS. To be honest you can get some long wait times like anywhere else for hepl on the phone. You can also email for help and they also have chat for help. Feel free to ask anything you want about them here or PM or email me and I will try to answer anything. Also if you send them someone you get a free month's of access. BTW the cost is $21.95 for dialup they also offer DSL. The web sites are startrek.net and earthlink.net

I have compuserve at home and it's very slow. Next year I will be finished with the contract (got a $400 rebate off a laptop purchase) and I will definitely be finding a DSL provider.

Road Runner cable. Very dependable, very fast.

I did use MSN in my pre-cable days. It was a good, basic service. It has morphed a couple of times since then though, so I can't really recommend (or disparage) it now.

type and it goes....look and it brings it to me.....I love it.....plus we had multiple computers all going at once.....mine..hubbies and the grandkids were all on one....no extra amount either.....

Still puttering along with dialup:D . We've had AT&T for years and are very satisifed. We pay only $14.95/month for 150 hrs. I think that they also have an unlimited plan for around $21.95.

Good Luck,

I also have AT&T Worldnet.
Have had them for about 5 years. (No cable or DSL available where I am :() But I haven't had any trouble with my access and it isn't all that slow (until I go to my son's and he has cable modem ;))
I have the unlimited access.

Comcast cable. Mitch,go with a high speed connection, you won't regret it.You'll wonder how you ever had the patience for dial up after a few minutes surfing.

IMO,cable is more reliable than DSL.

Mitch,

We have had Verizon dial-up for almost 5 years and have never had a problem. I am only thinking about leaving them to go to cable (Adelphia). But first I have to get a faster COMPUTER! :)
There are those who really like the personalization of AOL - you have to "work" at getting things personalized on ISPs. But it is worth the effort, IMO.
Good Luck!

Time Warner Road Runner.

It works but I could like it better if it were faster.

(Helenabear thinks its a good speed but I have a screenshot of my connection being much faster than it is now)

I have Earthlink Dial-up. DSL and Cable are still not available out here in the boonies.

Earthlink is a bit more expensive than some of the local ISP's I have tried, but it is far more dependable. I very rarely have a hard time connecting.

I have Adelphia Powerlink. I love my cable modem and will NEVER go back to dial-up again! :teeth:

I have starband right now ( satelite internet ) and it's fast but also pricey ( @69 a month ). I am just getting cable internet on the 22nd of this month, keeping my fingers crossed that it's the same or faster because it's also half the price I'm paying now!

Mskanga, from what I understand, you'll get access that's at least slightly faster with your cable modem. I've never used a satelite modem, but I'm very happy with cable.

We have Charter Pipeline. There were some problems at the beginning because they wouldn't turn the signal up enough so that we could get good speed (we kept losing packages), but we finally got a repairman out who actually understood Internet service and it was fixed immediately.

Bell South DSL is our current ISP. We hit some bumps to begin with, but everything is fine now. We were using Earthlink dialup. We never had a problem with them.....and they don't force a propretary browser on you either.....:D
