What is your thermostat set at?

 Thermostat? What's a thermostat?

We have a pellet stove :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc

My house is currently 73 degrees.

My heating bill for the whole winter will be $770 (3 tons of pellets).

We do have an oil fired boiler as back up. If for some reason the pellet stove runs out of pellets in the middle of the night (in other words if I was lazy and didn't fill it ;)) then the temp has to drop to 60 before the oil kicks in. We put 100 gallons delivered in back in September. So far we haven't had to get more - and we heat our water with oil. DH works for an oil company as a service guy and one of the benefits they get is that we get to pay cost for our oil so I can't compare our rate to anyone else's.

The absolute highest ours gets is 64 degrees.

I don't think we have ever set it higher than that. (It is currently 21 degrees outside right now, and we have it set at 63 degrees.)

We average about 62 degrees.

At night and when we aren't here, it goes down to 60 degrees, and I have never been cold.
These are my numbers exactly! Generally 62 when I'm home, 59/60 at night and when I'm gone, and possibly up to 64 if I want that (which I rarely do).

We're in TX (Houston area) and we don't get as cold as some of you! Right now we're in a "cold snap" with temps in the 20's at night and 30's during the day

We have electric heat and we also have ventless gas logs (on a thrmostat control) in the family room. I set the electric heat at 62 24 hrs a day. The logs thermostat is set at 68 - this thing puts out a ton of heat!

We have gas heat with 2 furnaces and 2 AC's.

66 when we are at home and 65 when we are gone- Heat

74 when we are home and 75 when we are gone- AC

This recent and long cold snap is going to cost us a little extra. It has been ultra cold here for a week solid with a couple of days left!

Currently the outside temp is -17F. We have our house temp at 70. When it isn't so cold outside we set it at 69. lol

Is there a way to figure how much extra it would cost to bump the thermostat up a degree or two (or three)?

I started reading this thread because I'm cold. Those of you that are able to live in a house at 60 or 62 make me feel like a wimp. It is about zero outside today and the walls are radiating cold and the drafts from the windows are really chilly.

I know that this would not be an absolute number like 75 cents/per day per degree. But, if I know what I currently keep my house at, can I figure some percent of our typical bill per additional degree?

I 'm under my afghan wondering "if I gave up one day at Disney could I be warm all winter long?" That might be worth it to me.

Yesterday when my portable heater went out, I kicked up the heat to a balmy 68. I'm tired of being cold (it is 15 here). I guess I'll know how much extra it will be next month.

I've always heard a decent part of your electric bill is your hot water. Maybe taking speed showers will balance out bumping it up a couple of degrees.

This past week it has been set at 68 when we are at home and down to 65 during day while we are gone due to the extreme -30 to -45 below temps to keep pipes from freezing and semi-warm. Typically, though we have it set at 66 when home and 60 when gone during the day. AC is set at 73 when we are home and 78 when gone. Thankfully we are on budget billing plan so it will even out during the course of 12 months.

Wow, you all like it cold!!!

I set my house at 70 when we're not around and 73 for a few hours in the evenings and weekends. And I'm still cold if I'm downstairs because my north facing wall is poorly insulated and has lots of windows! Upstairs gets toasty, but not the main level. OTOH, in the summer, that means I need less AC. I keep it at 78-80 all day, and only put it down to 74 when we're sleeping. (to cool off the upstairs mainly. That will give the main floor more than enough cooling for the next day.) With all that, my budget bill, for a 2,200 sq ft split level home, all electric, just went down to $175/month. I'm good with that. In fact, if we were uncomfortable, I would be willing to let that go higher.

Mine was set at 66 degrees until I got the gas bill this morning of $500:scared1:! I turned off all of the lights (electric bill was $150), and decreased the thermostat to 64 degrees. It is freezing in here now! What do you set yours at?

57 degrees when we are home, 50 degrees when we are not at home and at night. If chilly we put on a blanket or light jacket/sweater. We are in Ohio.

Our temps range from 58-64 in the winter. I say the average would be 60 I bump it a degree or two if the kids complain. We all have down comforters on our beds.

In the summer only run the AC when it becomes humid, average is 80, just enough to take the humidty out. We open the windows every chance we get.

We have 2 zone heat and programmable thermostats. The downstairs which we rarely even use is set at 58 or 60 all the time. The upstairs is set to 66 when we are home (evenings & weekends) and 60 when we are at work or sleeping. I've actually found that I sleep better when its cooler :goodvibes

Im in NE we keep it at 65-66 during day 67-68 in evening and lower it to 66 when we go to sleep. Granted when I set my therm to 68 after like 20mins it reg the temp around 70 but if it goes above 70 I get hot so I end up lowering it. we use gas heat. I would cook if I set temp to 73 lol

It's only supposed to be really cold for a few more days. This week is only the 2nd time I've had my heat on all winter. The other time was just one evening/night.

It's set between 70-75 (it's not digital) but it's not that warm in most of the house. I have concrete floors that help to keep it cool - great in the summer but not so great right now when its below freezing outside! I, too am in several layers and have on socks and slippers and I'm still a bit chilly. My computer is next to my windows, though.

We are in WI and we keep it at 71 all the time. We live in a brand new 2700 sq ft house (two months old). Our last bill was under $200. We did insulate like crazy inside and out, upgraded our windows, upgraded our heater (which I'm sure is helping the most), and really researched to find the most efficient (yet affordable) appliances. We also keep our curtains closed when it is really cold (below 15) out to help keep the heat in.

One trick our heater company told us was not to use the programmable thermostats. He said they actually make your furnace work harder because it is constanly trying to catch up. He told us the savings weren't worth the wear and tear on your furnace. The constant temperature change is also not good for your woodwork. It's supposed to cause it to warp more. Not sure how true that is, but I like it warm anyway so that is fine with me. (yea, I know, I live in the wrong state)

I am south of New Orleans and we keep having hard freezes here. It has been years since I have had to turn my water off so my pipes don't burst! I love the cold weather though. Better than humid and hot!

We keep our digital thermostat on 67 when the heater is on, and 70 when the ac is on. Our house is elevated about 5 feet off the ground, and the underneath of it isn't insulated. I kinda think our electricity bill will be high this month!

We're in MD and it's really cold right now and we keep our house at 67. I end up being cold so I usually wear s Snuggie when I'm on the couch or keep some snuggly slippers on my feet.

Our gas bill has been right at 200 for the past two months keeping it at that temp...

Right now it is on 68, but I got my electric bill (I'm all electric) yesterday and it was $224! Our bonus room is very toasty at that temp and we've been spending a lot of time in that room since it has been very cold the last couple of weeks. Think I'll be turning the heat down and just move in to the bonus room for the winter to hibernate!
