What is your single biggest expense in your budget every month/year?

For us it's groceries hands down. We spend about $900-$1100 a month.

1. Ds' private school
2. Paying for our own health insurance
3. Gas/Groceries (equal amounts each month)

Besides mortgage, I guess it's the car payment. We're paying double+ to get it paid off faster. Everything else is much less (not counting taxes/401k of course).

Living in NJ, it is definitely taxes. Besides the property taxes, both DH and I got the rudest awakening of our lives last spring when filing NJ income tax for the first time (we moved here in 2006), when we discovered that NJ taxes your contributions to 403b and 401k based on your combined gross income.

For us it is insurance. Nothing else even comes close.

Insurance. Our vehicles are paid for but DH owns his own business therefore insurance is paramount in our lives. Health, auto, home, Disability, life, all thos business requirements. sigh Taxes run a close second. Again, self employed business owner-taxed to the hilt!!!
