The best festivals--I'm just a 5 minute walk from French Quarter Fest, a 15 minute walk from the Mardi Gras parade route, a 5 minute drive from Jazz Fest, I can see the NYE fireworks from my window or take a 7 minute stroll to the waterfront....
The best people--I have seriously never lived or visited anywhere that is so incredibly neighborly, even to perfect strangers. In Orlando, I didn't even know the people who lived in the next apartment. Here, I know everybody.
The best live music--All I have to do is take an evening stroll, and I'll come across brass bands, guitarists playing on the street corner, and an endless array of bars where I can sit comfortably and listen to music of any stripe all night long for a one-drink cover charge
The best shopping--whether I want vintage clothes, pricey antiques, battered old stuff, swords, a huge farmers' market, costumes, records, a fantastic nighttime art market....all within a few minutes' walk
The best food--There are literally hundreds of incredible restaurants in easy walking distance from me, including the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the United States. Yet the corner store deli counters serve up food that's every bit as delicious, at a quarter of the price. Truly something for every taste and budget.
The best historical preservation--I live in a gorgeous Victorian single family home that was renovated down to the studs right before we move in, for just a teensy bit more than we were paying for a generic apartment in Orlando. We also have beautiful above ground cemeteries, stunning courtyards, Jackson Square, the riverfront...even the t-shirt shops are in these incredible historic buildings. The carriages pass by my yard on their route, and if I ever want to know something specific, I just ask one of the many historic tour guides I know.
I could go on and on, but those are a few of the benefits that outweigh tent cities and car jackings
