Soul food?

Whenever you see a show talking about soul food, its always deep south food. Fried chicken, mac N cheese, chicken fried steak, etc. For me, thats not soul food, thats just greasy food!!!!
I think soul food is what you grew up eating, and can take you back there again with one bite or smell. For me, its sushi. My parents took me to sushi restaurants at least once a week from age 2, and when I eat it now, its just comforting.

So whats your idea of soul food?

what you are thinking of is comfort food. Comfort food is stuff that makes you happy because of memories. Soul Food is a lot of the stuff you first mentioned and greens and biscuits and such...It is part of the African American culture.

I think of Memphis ribs, french fries, cole slaw, fried okra, collard greens...

YUM!

Yes, this is exactly what I was about to post. Soul Food and comfort food are different. . . although I guess for some people they probably are the same foods.

Comfort food for me is mostly southern food, especially carbs like mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. Oh, and ice cream - can't forget the ice cream!

Exactly what I would have said! :thumbsup2 There is a big difference between comfort food and soul food. (unless you grew up eating chitterings, tripe, greens, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, etc...LOL Then they may be one and the same.) Soul Food is very specific to the deep south/African American culture.

Thats pretty much word for word what I was going to say.

Although you didn't have to be African American to grow up on soul food in the South. For us, it was just food. Except chitlins. :rotfl2: ( I know how to spell it, but no one ever SAID it that way.)

Soul food is black southern US cuisine. It might consist of more lower cuts of meat like chitlins or pigs feet, but otherwise soul food and southern food is about the same. Fried chicken, catfish, okra (bleah), green beans (cooked with a little ham ... yummmm), corn, greens, cornbread, etc.

Comfort food, to me, is what makes someone think "just like mom used to make."

That's so funny...When I was typing it, I was thinking, "This is SO wrong to be spelling it all proper like this...LOL"

Oh, and yeah I meant to say Southern and/or African American... :)

Mmm soul food. I'll agree with everyone else, pretty much. Soul food is food from the deep south.. I love going with my fiance to go visit his family in Mississippi. Soo much good food.. fried chicken, ribs, catfish, sweet potatoes, butter beans w/ham, hushpuppies, collard greens & turnip greens, corn bread, mac and cheese, grits, chicken fried steak, sweet potato pie, chicken & waffles and LOTS of hot sauce. :woohoo: ... now I'm hungry. I can't wait to go back down there for Thanksgiving week.
