What is your favorite tapas?

Had these great cumin potatoes at a tapas place during a street fair. They were more or less wedge fries served in a paper cone, but they were so good.

We were in Barcelona a few years ago and were really enjoying all the simple but delicious little bits of stuff at the tapas places. We don’t speak Spanish at all though so a few things were hit-or-miss. We generally ordered anything with the word “patata” in the description, thinking it was safe enough. At one place we ended up paying 4€ for a small bag of Lay’s plain chips - they didn’t even bother to put them on a plate.

Artichokes, goat cheese (queso de cabra). Each tapas bar made them a little differently, but they were always delicious.

It’s hard to pick a favorite.

Assuming wine, bread, manchego, and olives are givens, I usually order a plate with Serrano and/or Iberian ham, garlic shrimp, a rabbit or duck plate, a squid or octopus plate, patatas bravas, roasted red peppers with sherry dressing or piquillo peppers with goat cheese, bacon-wrapped dates, apple and fennel salad, sometimes gazpacho, sometimes tortilla, flan, and sangria.

That's kind of a letdown.

But in my case was a street fair where the entire street was closed to motor vehicles. They set up a table in front of their restaurant and they only had about three choices for sale where one could see what was available. I'd be ticked off if I ordered something that sounded spectacular and turned out to be a dud. I've also been in the restaurant to order. At least around here one can always ask and there usually isn't a language barrier. I've been to other countries where I had weird issues just pointing at what I thought might be what I wanted on menu. McDonald's has picture menus, but a small place with a daily changing menu isn't going to be able to do that.

These are the patatas bravas at Cesár in Berkeley, California. Good stuff. They kind of similar in style with the potato cut, but obviously with a different seasoning.

choirizo, Serrano ham, pan con tomato, calamares, patates Brava, tortilla Española to name a few with Olives to go along with it. I haven’t had tapas in ages which is sad considering I am half Spanish. I need to go to a Spanish restaurant soon.

Originally from Andalusia ( Almeria ) but a lot of my family moved up to Catalunya ( Girona area) which besides Madrid is the places I have visited. Sadly have not been back since I was a teen. Hopefully one day.

I have a Spanish ancestor from Madrid from the 18th century. He has a mysterious past with many rumors past down through time in the family. I wish I could find out more but documents are almost non existent.

What your favorite place to visit in Spain?

I haven’t been since I was 16 so over 30 years so my interests would be much different now. At that time, I liked when we went to the beach in Costa Brava. I also liked Barcelona.
I haven’t been to Spain yet. I will one day post pandemic. I hope Disney does eventually put Spain in the Epcot W.S. someday. The food alone is reason enough. 😋

Pan con tomates. Omg. It is other-worldly yet so simple! I first had it at Columbia House in St Augustine. I was swooning and I asked the waiter to tell me how it was made. He said:

Grill a thick piece of rustic sourdough bread drizzled with good quality olive oil. Then rub a cut garlic clove on it, and then rub a fresh, homegrown tomato on it to get the pulp off. Drizzle with more olive oil and some salt. I make it all the time in the summer and it is unbelievable.

I wonder what Angelica Teach and Princess Chelina of Zaragosa would say theirs’ are? 🤔 Also do we know what part of Spain Angelica is from? I tried to google it but I can’t find a Disney accurate answer.:confused3

Once I went to that tapas place I mentioned for my birthday. They actually had paella on the menu, which I know isn't tapas. But they also had these kind of potatoes that day.
