What is your favorite children's book? Tell me why!

I loved the Little House books. They're so heartwarming and full of charm. They also link a few generations together. It was amazing to me to sit down with three generations and talk about these books. I'd certainly share them with my children (if I ever have any). The last time I read them, I was 20. I'd still sit down and read them today. Such lovely stories.

I love the Little House books, too. I tried reading Little House in the Big Woods to my seven-year-old but she really isn't quite ready yet. She got completely grossed out when Pa rounded up the pig and slaughtered it. City girl! ;) We also love Charlotte's Web.

Little children's books:

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble

Caps For Sale

Listen Buddy

Me First

Panda Palace

There's a Cow in the Road

I could go on and on and on...

My 2 favs as a little girl were Drummer Hoff (I have no idea why, I liked to read it and I liked the artwork, I know that much)
and The Best Loved Doll

My favorite book to read to my kids was "The Monster at the End of the Book". It starts off with Grover from Sesame Street learning there will be a monster appearing at the end of the book. He tries lots of stuff like tying the pages together with string, building a brick wall, etc. to get you to stop turning the pages. Turns out, he is the monster at the end of the book, and he is kinda embarassed about being nervous about nothing. Its a really cute book. My kids would laugh like crazy when we read this book.

Loved this one too. I thinkit was a Little Golden Book. I had a stuffed Grover that would read it to DD and I can actually do a very good Grover voice. Fun book to read for sure!:)

One of my new favorites is a book called Who Wants Arthur? It's about a dog in a pet store that doesn't get sold and he tries to act like all the other animals (rabbits, fish, snakes, etc.) in order to find a family. It's a very sweet book and the illustrations are amazing.

I am glad to hear you say that. I loved the series as a child, and read them all in 2nd grade. I started reading them to my second graders last summer, and they were really not interested. They couldn't relate at all to the characters or story lines, so I am not sure they are ready for it yet.

They both loved Charlotte's Web, though.

My favorite as a kid was Superfudge by Judy Blume.

I have a few that were my favorites to read to my DD's...........

Stellaluna
The Giving Tree
Love You Forever
Goodnight Moon
The Polar Express

When I was a child, my favorite series was Little House on the Prarie. I absolutely loved these books & will still watch the TV shows when they are on.

My favorite book when I was little was called "The hollyhonks garden of gneedle and gnibb."
I was a book about gnomes fighting and forgiving. lol.

The Kissing Hand
Click Clack Moo Cows That Type

My favorite book to read to my son was "The going to bed book". I can recite it from memory.

As I child I read anything given to me. I loved Clifford and Curious George as a small child and then Judy Blume as I got older.

My favorite that I read to my girls is Where the wild things are. I LOVED that book as a little girl. I bought the DVD and fell in love with that too. We went to the Philly children's museum because they had a Maurice Sedak exhibit. The girls are amazed that I can "read" the whole book without turning a page. I have it memorized.

Also love "where the sidewalk ends" by Shel Silverstein

That was mine too!!

And I also loved "the monster at the end of this book"

Roald Dahl's The BFG (Big Friendly Giant)

I read that book soooo many times when I was younger.

I think it would make an excellent movie with all the effects they have now, think like Tim Burton producing it!

I also enjoyed The Witches, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach....I guess I was just a Roald Dahl Fan... and hey, all those have been movies! So I guess the BFG just has to wait its turn!

My favorite children's book is The Little House by Virginia Burton. I was just fascinated by this book as a kid. It showed the progression of a house that was built in the quiet countryside, but as time progressed, a bustling city grows up around it, completely surrounding the little house. The little house eventually became abandoned and forgotten. Happily, a decendant of the original builder finds the house, moves it back to the countryside, and restores it, and the house is happy again. :)

I just was amazed at watching the countryside change into the city, page by page. I am now a children's librarian, and we have this book at the library, so I can recommend it to a new generation! :)

I love the rhythm and the pictures. My girls would say it with me. I think their knowing the words may have even helped them learn to read earlier now that I think about it.

I have 2:
The Diary of Anne Frank
Little Women
I read these over and over when I was 8-10. As a small child, I liked Hop on Pop because it was the first book that I learned to read.

I really liked that book too as a child, I actually remember the experience of being read that at the library during story hour when I was about 4. I bought the book for my son and he really doesn't care for it. :sad1:

1st grade teacher here...I have LOTS of favorites, for many reasons:

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom- I love this book! When I was student teaching in Mobile, I remember playing the tape that went along with the book. Ray Charles reads the book, and I love his rendition!

Miss Nelson is Missing- one of my favorites! I read this to my class every year, and tease the kids that I am going to come to school as Miss Swamp!!

Billy Joel has a beautiful song called "Goodnight my Angel" This song has always been special to my family. I played the song for DD, and now there is a book to go along with it. the first time I read it to DD4, she burst into tears!!(she's sensitive!) That book is special to me by default- the song really holds the meaning.

Excuse the typos & grammar- I had 3 cosmos and am slurring my typing :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

My all time favorite was "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin. It is a mystery book. Millionaire Sam Westing dies and 16 heirs have to figure out what happened to win his estate. I got that book at the book fair in 5th grade in 1981 and 27 years later I still have my copy. I pull it out and read it at least once a year.

I also liked the Judy Blume books, especially the Fudge series.

two books that I adore have already been mentioned!

Miss Suzy and The Little House just darling books and I still have them.

I wonder if someone could help me though. We used to get the book of the month club and there was a Christmas book I loved and don't remember the name.

It had the people in a huge house find a Christmas tree and when they bring it home it is too big. They cut the top off and throw it away.....animals then come and take the tree but have to cut the top off. The final picture is the Big house with the large tree and then a view of the mouse that lives in the house with the top of the tree in his little room. So sweet. I wish I could find it. Anyone know where to even look? Thanks!
