Yes I have read all of the negative reviews on San Angel, but we are going to try it anyway and make our own decision. :thumbsup2 We are basically going for the atmosphere and because my DD 17 insists (she has taken 4 years of Spanish and is really into the culture).

So...for those of you who have been and liked it, what did you get to eat? DD and I will eat almost anything, but DH and DS are pickier (DH will eat no cheese  ).

Thanks for any input. We are actually excited about eating here in spite of the negative reviews. :woohoo:

On our trip last month, my son requested to go there, so we went. I'll admit, I wasn't thrilled that he chose that restaurant because it's always been a bit disappointing. HOWEVER, I'm glad to report that I was pleasantly surprised this go around. It really was a far better dinner experience than I remembered it being previously.

First and most importantly - wonderful margarita! I drink classic margaritas on the rocks and this was right up there with one of the better ones I've had (and I've had a lot, LOL).

I'm not sure if you have kids young enough for a kids meal, but their kids quesadilla meal was really great. My son loved it. We eat at a lot Mexican restaurants and this meal wasn't your standard kids quesadilla meal. Although, if you have a picky kid who wants a typical quesadilla and balks at something that looks different, you may have a hard time with this. It looked almost like a taco because it was so thick. Basically, one tortilla folded in half and absolutely stuffed with shredded chicken and cheese. It was probably 3/4 inch thick at least. And the meal was served with rice and fruit. He also had a fruit smoothie as his drink/dessert.

I had the Plato Mexicano - beef tampiquena, chicken enchilada, beef flauta, black refried beans, Mexican rice - and it was very yummy. Way more food than I could possibly eat, but I tried some of each item and it was all good.

My only complaint is that the chips are bagged chips. But we ordered a side of guacamole to dip them in and that helps. :thumbsup2

Your DS will definitely get a chance to practice his Spanish. My DS (he's four, LOL) knows some Spanish from his teachers at his preschool and he loves impressing all the CMs around the Mexican pavilion with his Spanish. They all are quite enthusiastic about speaking with him and letting his practice some of his words.

Edited to add: We went there in 2005 when DS was still allergic to dairy and I don't remember it being a problem to get him a meal without cheese. I can't remember specifics right now though. But I don't think we called ahead and special ordered or anything. I know they have steaks, etc. on the menu and you could just get that with rice, beans, etc. - no cheese.

we are going to give it a try this summer as well. I am concerned about the menu since what we are used to at home is more tex-mex. Mostly for my DD11. So far she is thinking about chips and cheese and maybe a cheese quesidilla- but just maybe. No rice, no beans. glad to know fruit is an option. Looking forward to other positive comments as well.

We went in April 2007 and loved the "sope traditional", the "mahi-mahi veracruazana", and the white chocolate bread pudding. DD had the shrimp and spaghetti but it was too spicy for her and she only liked the flan (okay she ate most of my bread pudding). The setiing is great although the tables are very close together. Have fun :)

Our family loves this restaurant! Kids are ages 16, 11 and 7 and they all eat great here. My husband always gets Filete Motuleno and I tend to jump around the menu. We always like it. I'm not sure why it gets such bad reviews. The atmosphere is great too!

subbing... this trip will be our first time eating there and I just wasn't to thrilled.. It was on DH must do a few new things list... glad to see the postitive responses and that DD will be able to use her new language skills as well... (thanks Dora!)

We ate there this past December and enjoyed it. While it is not our *favorite* place to eat we do love the atmosphere and have never had bad food or terrible service.

DH had: Sopa Azteca (Traditional tortilla soup with avocado, cheese and pasilla pepper), Plato Mexicano (Beef Tenderloin Tampiquena, chicken enchilada, and beef flauta, served with sour cream, black refried beans and Mexican rice)

I had my all time favorite (last 3 trips!:thumbsup2 ): Pollo a las Rajas (Grilled chicken breast served over red peppers, onions, chile poblano, chorizo and melted cheese) I don't see it listed on the current AllEars menu, but I also had the Sopa de Elote (sp?) (Corn Chowder)... excellent! The recipes for these can be found here (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1575103) and tast pretty close- I made both of these dishes 2 weekends ago.

We both had Flan de Vanilla (vanilla custard in syrup, topped with roasted almonds) Many don't like flan, but it's one of those things we enjoy while at San Angel.

From the kids menu DD had: Pollo Con Fideos (Chicken tenders served with "fideos"-angel hair pasta in a light tomato sauce topped with shredded cheese, mixed vegetables and fresh fruit cocktail

DS had: Mahi-Mahi (Grilled fillet of Mahi-Mahi served with white rice, mixed vegetables and fresh fruit cup)

They both had a cup of vanilla ice cream with Mickey sprinkles for dessert.

ITA!! :thumbsup2
seriously, if any restaurant was that awful, would it still be open & packed every day/night?! :confused3

we ate at SAI last oct, & enjoyed it. the food was very good, very similar to what i've had in mexico itself, (not tex-mex, imho), atmosphere & decor are authentic & beautiful. our server was obviously new & a little uncertain, but we were patient with him, & thought he did an excellent job.
the restaurant itself is very dark, & can get crowded (crowding is a problem we see in most WDW restaurants tho).
overall, we really enjoyed the experience, & would recommend everyone try it for themselves.
hth :)

DW and I go to San Anjel every trip. We love it and really enjoy the food.

I usually get the Puntas de Fileete, and DW usually gets the Plato Maexicano. We both like the tortilla soup, and of course the Dos Equis and the Margaritas!

I love the Pollo a las Rajas too! It is the only thing I order since I first tried it.
The problem is the menus are rotated at San Angel a couple of times a year..so sometimes no Pollo a las Rajas:scared1:

I always order the flan, it's a perfect dessert after the spicey Pollo.

You should try making it at home- very easy and pretty close to SanAngel! Of course, it's hard to duplicate exactly and I think the atmosephere is half of it, but is sure does take you back to Disney!

We enjoy eating at San Angel Inn. I think our only problem is reading the menu. Love the atmosphere, but it makes it hard to read. :)

DD19 loves the Sopa Azteca. And I really enjoyed the nachos and the plato mexicano. I don't think the nachos are on the lunch menu anymore though. They had chicken on them and it wasn't an appetizer. I remember the plate was huge and really yummy. :thumbsup2

And the margarita was really good, too. :drinking1

Loved what I eat there, but could not see what I eat.

my SO and I really like san angel inn but we are vegetarians and we eat the vegetarian combo plate. It's excellent!! I would recommend it to anyone.

tricia.

My favorite is one that usually falls under the "Sugerencia del Chef" category: Chiles en Nogada. The description I found for it says - chiles poblanos stuffed with pork picadillo, made with assorted fresh fruits, covered with a walnut sauce and garnished with pomegranate seeds and (I think) cilantro.

The first time I had this dish it was heavenly, on my next visit to San Angel Inn it wasn't available and when I asked for it, my server whispered conspiratorily, "It's only available seasonally". On my next visit it was available and I ordered it again, but it wasn't quite as good as the first time, maybe nothing could live up to that first taste of this dish?!

I can't remember if it had cheese in it, but I don't think so.

DH usually orders the Plato Mexicano, he likes the variety.

I hope you have a lovely meal there! :goodvibes

Even amidst all of the negative reviews, San Angel is a must for me every trip. I am like a deer in headlights when I look at a menu in a Mexican restaurant; everything always sounds so good! Since I can never make up my mind, I always go for a combo platter when available. My vote goes towards the Plato Mexicano. Enjoy! Even if you find that you are not crazy about the food, the atmosphere is wonderful.

I honestly can't remember what we had there but my dh & I have enjoyed it every time we've been there.

Thanks for all your positive comments. :worship: Now I can really get excited about eating here...I was second guessing our decision to eat here, but I really wanted to try it because I've always loved the atmosphere in there. As someone said earlier, how bad can it be if it is always so crowded. I look forward to trying it for ourselves.
