What is up with the new coupon "barcodes"?

I don't know what's going on, but they don't scan! :confused3 I noticed they started having two bar codes a while back, now more and more only have the new "barcode" and not the traditional one. Not sure if the retailers are refusing to upgrade their equipment or what's going on but I'm not happy with this change.

The worst is Walmart, where they "beep" but don't actually deduct anything from your total. At least they beep, at Target & Walgreen's they beeped and then cashier refused to take them.

They are more secure in that they are harder to decifer (ie fraud). And yes the stores have to upgrade their software, it will be a gradual process.

Thanks for the link. I was just reading how the new system will allow manufacturers to add in various restrictions such as "do not double". I've always wondered why that would be a condition. Isn't the doubling something a store offers and then pays for? You can't require a manufacture to pay double because your store wants to offer that, right? Just wondering why a store can't choose what to double and what not to double???

It's driving me nuts. I had a heck of a time yesterday at walgreens.

Just noticed this today at Walmart. The coupon "beeped" but nothing came off. So glad I was watching because it happened again. Not sure if casier did anything different to make it work, but I did get the money off.

This happened to me about a month ago. I was at Dominicks, and was using their self-checkout lane (which I absolutely hate, and that could be a whole new thread...), but the coupon just would not take. So, they have one cashier who stands there by the self-checkout lanes to help people, and I had to wait for her to finish helping someone else for about five minutes. When she came to help me, she had to fold it a certain way to get it to scan. It was very annoying.

you have to cover up the funky looking barcode to get them to scan right.

I have wondered that same thing myself. It makes me so mad to get a coupon that says do not double. I mean, they can't get double from the manufacture can they?

The problem is a lot of the coupons are now starting to only have the funky looking barcode on them, so there is no "traditional" barcode for them to scan.
