What is the worst thing you have done to eat when you were poor?

Did anyone ever put tupperware containers in their purse, then purposely overfill their plates at all you can eat buffets? :rolleyes1

Well I would like to say my pantry is always well stocked but with two teenage boys we go through a lot of food. However, I could easily go couple of weeks without buying any groceries and we would be fine.

Just curious how many of us have gone overboard now that food isn't so scarce for us? I'm not talking about weight (although I do think my food issues stemmed in large part from those days).

For example, I have cupboards, fridge and freezer overflowing with enough food now to feed a third world country! There are tremendous varieties of tastylicious treats and good old fashioned home cooked meals that I love to serve my guests. When you come to my house, it's all about the banquet. We eat very, very well in this house. About 2 to 3 times a week Dh takes several dozen cookies, a cake, pie, cinnamon rolls or sweet bread to work to feed his crew. About once a month it's a full lunch like fried chicken and home made potato salad or meatloaf. Food was such a treat to me at one point that now when I want to do something nice for anyone that's the first thing I think of.

I confess to over-buying so much that once, when things were kinda tight for a couple of months I didn't buy any, I mean ANY groceries other than a bit of fresh produce and dairy products for 10 entire weeks. We still ate like kings :rotfl:

My pantry is referred to ask Tammy's Corner Market and I'm often teased that we'll have no problem surviving the apocolypse but you know what? It makes me feel safe and secure. Am I the only one out there who feels that way?

Yep!!! My fridge, freezer and pantry are always full. I never really thought about it before but now that you mention it I wonder if that is why. Interesting......

I can relate to many things in this post and do most of them. I don't think we were poor growing up, altough my Mom did cook from scratch and sew most our clothes....I am not sure if she was frugal by choice or need. In my family's home, food was always served in small portions. Sometimes, very small portions. I used to think it was a money issue, but my parents are well off now and that is still how it is. I guess maybe since they eat very little, they assumed noone else is hungry :confused3 my sisters are the same way. I am opposite. I always have too much food prepared on purpose, so everyone can eat as much as they want and then some and DH's friends are always sent home with food. We always have a homemade dessert too....the kids and I really enjoy cooking and DH and his family and friends love eating, so it works out. I will sometimes make large patches of food on the weekends and take them to my family, since I know that my family prepares such small portions and it won't be enough to satisfy DH and the rest of us that eat normal portions.

Yes. I always have too much food in the house and I always cook from scratch. If someone comes over unexpectedly and I cannot serve a 3 course meal in under an hour I feel like a failure.

My DD7 had a friend stay overnight 2 nights ago and the child would NOT eat. Drove me crazy. I need to feed people.

I have one from when I worked there and we went into debt for it.. a vacumm of all things, we went into debt for a stupid vacumm.

I will say that it has saved our butts several times, especially when dh spilled a gallon of red koolaid on grey carpet, I was grateful to have it then!

I gather it was straight commission? That's why I never want that type of job. I want something for my efforts. I could never work for Kirby anyway. Their tactics are way to high pressure and I'd be like, you don't want a vacuum? Ok see ya...
Thats another reason I quit. I dont like to pressure people into buying. It was straight comission but their vacums are somewhere around $1000. When I quit I was offered a 3 or 4 yr old used one for $300! I remember my mom had a kirby but had no idea that it was so expensive!I own a hoover from Wal-mart.
