What is the worst suprise you ever had?

My Mom went in for surgery to repair what was thought to be a twisted bowel, and I was the only one who could be there in the waiting room. The surgeon came in afterwards and just said, "I'm sorry, but it's cancer." That's how I found out my Mother was seriously ill, all by myself. I had to make all sorts of phone calls to tell people.

My parents went shopping one afternoon, came home, told us to come outside because the had bought us (my brother and I) a surprise... There was a huge box in the trunk of my mother's Chevy Impala. I was *SURE* it was a trampoline. It was the 70's, her car was an absolute boat.

Nope.

It was a new lawn mower.

When my parents told me we were moving. It was around 1979. I was devastated. Moving in 4th grade was so hard.

However, I wound up meeting my best friend. We've been friends for 42 years and just got tattoos together. The universe unfolds as it should.

I can't say it's the worse, but at 3 years old it was...when my parents told me and my sister that they were having another baby. My older sister was so excited, I requested that they send it back. To make matters worse, a month before the baby arrived, my parents made me a preschool dropout, pulling me out just short of when the whole little cap and gown ceremony would have happened.

My youngest is 9 years younger than my next oldest kid. The two older kids fought like crazy - then kids #3 came along. Both older kids went through a phase when kid 3 was a baby when they demanded we take her to the fire station and drop her off. Now they both love her and everyone gets along MUCH better! No question she was just what they needed.

It did take quite a long time for me to deal with being the middle child, but now that we're grown and can look back there are some really funny moments from our childhood. Like how she was the only one small enough to fit down the laundry chute...ha, ha

:sad1: It's happened a few times and I can't exactly say which time was worst, but finding out, basically from the clear blue sky, that dear friends are divorcing. These are couples that we would have said we knew extremely well, and that never let on their troubles were near at that level. Proves that one never really knows what goes on behind closed doors and it hits like a ton of bricks...
