Because you could not think what else to buy them.

My Dad is a chef at a hotel, so last year I got him some cooking utensils as I could not see anything else to buy. However my Dad already has lots of utensils which are a lot better than the ones I brought as the chefs have to own there own utensils and take them into work. Also they were from a Jamie Oliver range and my Dad has mentioned many times before i got them that he is not a fan of Jamie Oliver.

I put a great deal of thought into my gifts. When I resort to a gift certificate I feel I am giving the worst gift. Yes there will be many CG this year for all of my late teenage to early 20 year old nephews.

I (hope) I haven't ever given a gift that wasn't liked but like Mickeyfan2 I do feel like a cop out when I give a voucher. I only ever give them if that's whats specifically asked for but it still feels 'cheap'

As a young teen, I gave my mother a bright, shiny muffin tin. Bet she enjoyed that!
My Dsis & I used to give mother fancy little handkerchiefs. Wow! for a few years there, for every occassion! Mother's Day. birthdays, Christmas, what were we thinking??? :rotfl2:

I usually ask people what they would like. That way people get what they want.

Sorry Carol, I'm having him for Christmas - so tough :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I'd really like to think that I wouldn't buy a naff Christmas present, as I do tend to buy things that I would like bought for me. I usually give money or gift cards as a last resort. :thumbsup2

I am having trouble deciding what to get my brother this year, he is 19.

:rotfl2: ive brought my mum two lightshades for her hall this year !!!

she wanted them anyway and ive got her some more personal stuff as well :)

I bought my sil some hair straighteners one year, she opened them and looked at my dh and said " why do i need hair straghteners when i spend hours each morning trying to curl my hair? can i have the reciept to take them back?" i've never bothered since and just ask her, for her to say " I don't know surprise me!" she gets vouchers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst present I ever got someone was completely intentional. The guy had just broken up my my best friend very publically, totally humiliating her and destroying her self confidence (he broke up with her because she found out she had MS and he didn't want to go out with a "cripple" - oy!) Some smart alek put me as his secret santa (it was a messageboard one like on here), I found out that he HATED the band Toploader so I found a copy of their album (a friend was throwing it out) and gave him that! I thought I was being nice really, I felt like giving him a nice steaming batch of dog ****!!

I feel the same but would much rather they find something they enjoy than force my likes on someone and get it totally wrong :goodvibes

Yes, and if you'd all like to club together for me, I'll go and ask her ;)
