What single ingredient must be present for you to consider a dessert a s'more?

I voted "open fire" -- whether a campfire in the woods, or one of those giant lighters over a pyrex dish trying not to set off the fire alarm in a barracks room. Not that I've done that. :rolleyes1:littleangel:

You can use a different kind of cookie and any kind of chocolate, you can even make them in the microwave if you're desperate.....lol but you definitely need the marshmallow....

I voted marshmallow, but my full answer is more complex. A non-traditional "s'more" may be made with alternative cookies and chocolate, but for something else to be s'more flavored (like a s'mores cupcake) it must contain all three of the traditional ingredients.

I am just going to throw out there that it's not just marshmallows. It's the right type, Jett Puffs or similar, we can't get them here in NZ and the ones here are terrible. I have to bring bags full of marshmallows from every trip for our roasting, hot chics and smores.
For that matter while other types will work and taste ok, Hershey's chocolate is the best for smores because they are thin enough to melt well.
But I'm up for basically any type of cookie.
Our family fav is with Oreos, we call these Smoreos.

Mummabear--you could always MAKE marshmallows. It really isn't that difficult. Just sayin', a marshmallow desert is NOT a place I'd want to live!

As to s'mores--I think you need the flavors of chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker to have a true s'more. However, you could add to it--raspberry, peppermint--in some way (fresh raspberries? peppermint patty? flavored marshmallows? cinnamon grahams?) You can use any type of chocolate. You could dip a marshmallow into chocolate fondue and sprinkle it with graham cracker crumbs, or have a chocolate cupcake with marshmallow frosting and crumbs. Or use chocolate-covered graham crackers--on and on.

My family goes to a ranch every summer, and they have a bonfire a couple nights a week. They provide marshmallows for roasting. having gone there 20 years now, we bring our own chocolate and graham crackers, and are the envy of all!

Thanks for helping me win a bet with my husband!

The graham cracker can be exchanged for another cookie. I like s'mores with club crackers instead. They are buttery and rich like a cookie and the little bit of salt helps bring out the flavors of the chocolate and keeps the whole thing from being cloyingly sweet.

I think peanut butter chips, caramel, white chocolate, or butterscotch could all be exchanged for the chocolate.

I think a s'more cooked in the oven or microwave would have no soul, but it'd still qualify.

But I can't imagine what could be exchanged for the marshmallow!

I would not consider anything to be a smore that did not have all 3 ingredients. We often make ours at home in the microwave. It melts the chocolate just enough and gooifies the marshmallow.
