I agree.

You need all 3 (graham cracker, chocolate, & marshmallow) for a true s'more. Those 3 flavors together make a s'more.

Things can be added - peanut butter, raspberry syrup, etc., but the traditional 3 things still need to be there. You can substitute different crackers/cookies and different chocolates or even other candies (butterscotch), but, then, it's a twist on the traditional s'more & not the actual s'more.

If all you needed was the marshmallow, then any dessert w/ marshmallow would be considered a s'more.

I put marshmallow but the caveat to that is that it has to be ROASTED marshmallow. That distinctive feature is what makes a smore.

If it was only the ingredients then a Pinwheel Cookie or a Moon Pie would be a Smore.

But I can't imagine what could be exchanged for the marshmallow!

I've been meaning to try microwave ones with the Strawberry Marshmallow Fluff (but I think that's technically still marshmallow).

Since it's Easter time, try microwaving a Peep to make s'mores--then, they're "Jabba the Peep S'Mores"!

I would normally say all three, but I suppose marshmallow is the key ingredient. After reading some of the responses, I guess you could mix things up and try some other combos.

Last thread here on smores brought out a bunch of DISers who insisted you had to use Fluff not marshmallows.
Not a product sold many places, but it has some very vocal supporters here.
I would say you NEED everything but fire, but we never did smores on our camping trips. We always brought cookies, cake or pie from home.

I was am Explorer Scout, but with the Sheriff's Department. Only thing we had to do with camping was to provide security for the Scoutarama. And most of our time was spent pouring out the beer and Jack Daniels that the Scout Masters had snuck in!

Anyone who burns their marshmallows is not a friend of the S'more. :crazy2:

I have weird family members who insist that marshmallows must be charred black to be usable. I've thought of disowning them more than once.

Fluff is a New England thing mostly. They do sell marshmallow creme down south, but not every store carries Fluff. It's a shame, really. Not that I would use Fluff in a s'more.

Burning marshmallows is a sin.

Mummabear--you could always MAKE marshmallows. It really isn't that difficult. Just sayin', a marshmallow desert is NOT a place I'd want to live!

As to s'mores--I think you need the flavors of chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker to have a true s'more. However, you could add to it--raspberry, peppermint--in some way (fresh raspberries? peppermint patty? flavored marshmallows? cinnamon grahams?) You can use any type of chocolate. You could dip a marshmallow into chocolate fondue and sprinkle it with graham cracker crumbs, or have a chocolate cupcake with marshmallow frosting and crumbs. Or use chocolate-covered graham crackers--on and on.

My family goes to a ranch every summer, and they have a bonfire a couple nights a week. They provide marshmallows for roasting. having gone there 20 years now, we bring our own chocolate and graham crackers, and are the envy of all!

Lol can't get Graham cracker Le her either.
Thankfully I am able to get a fairly steady (2-3 times a year) delivery. I may resort to making them if my mules retire though

We have Fluff down south but don't care for it. Also ate some fudge that someone made with it - not my taste - I do love my traditional fudge (no marshmallow).

All the above. It's like asking if you want beef, onions, peppers and cheese on a Philly Cheese Steak. Without those ingredients you might have a good tasting sandwich, but, you do NOT have a Philly Cheese Steak! Smores have to have those ingredients or they are something else. You don't need the campfire though, that's not an ingredient that is a method of cooking.

Charred marshmallows are the best!!! I don't eat them any other way. I don't like
smores though - hate the marshmallow and chocolate combo.

100% in agreement with you here. Jet puff marshmellows will puff up almost twice the size being slow roasted over the fire, then in between 2 fudge stripe cookies and you have a "Whoo Hoo" We tried fudge grahams once and it was way to messy. I would say the the important things are what you like.

I am willing to skip the fire, the marshmallows, and the graham crackers but bring on the Hersey chocolate bar!!!

We spend almost every weekend camping and making the same smores over and over again gets a little boring! We have come up with numerous variations on our smores, and the only thing that each one has- and is definitely needed- is marshmallows.

Here are the options I usually have for the smores: I always have big jet puff marshmallows.

Base:
Graham crackers
Chocolate chip cookies
sugar cookies
peanut butter cookies
brownie cookies

Filling:
Hershey bars
peanut butter cups
Ghirardelli caramel squares
Ghirardelli mint chocolate squares
Twix bars
sliced in half snickers (lengthwise to thin them out)
Hershey cookies and creme bars
heath bars

My DD14's favorite combination is a brownie cookie base with a cookies and cream bar in the middle and marshmallow
DH's fave is peanut butter cookies with a peanut butter cup and marshmallow
My fave is chocolate chip cookie base with Ghiradelli caramel square and marshmallow

I also think you need all 3 to have a s'more. The cooking part is a bit less rigid, I've been known to roast marshmallows on our gas stove if we wanted them at home.

I was a Girl Scout for 12 years who spent a lot of time at camp. All these variations do sound delicious, but they aren't s'mores.

I don't eat them but when the kids were little, we almost always used chocolate frosting instead of a candy bar. It would melt much faster. Sometimes we used Fluff instead of marshmallows.
