So, knowing that not all sand is soft enough to go barefoot, and some is rocky and requires swim socks/shoes... what is the sand at Castaway Cay like? Can you comfortably go barefoot?

Thanks so much!!!

The sand is soft but there are lots of shells and some rocks. Better off wearing water shoes when going into the water.

Out of the water the sand is soft, almost like Moon Sand. In the water there are rocky parts because of all the shells.

The beach changes! I've experienced the beach (in water and out of water) as being extremely painful (Feb 2013...there had been a big storm that went through not too long before) and not painful at all.

I'd bring water shoes and see if you need them.

I was there in August and I didnt notice any rocks. :confused3 Shells, yes. But they dont hurt your feet. I like collecting shells...so pretty! ... The sand is beautiful and soft! I went barefoot, no water socks/shoes.
I agree the beach is groomed it's very soft no need for anything under foot unless the sand us very hot. Minimal shells and one of the best beaches there is.

I was just there last Sunday and went to Serenity Bay. It was the last day of our cruise so I didn't want to wear my water socks and have to clean and dry them off at the end of the day. I have to say I wish I had worn them. The sand down by the water did have lots of pieces of shells and I did scrape up the bottoms of my feet so it could be the time of year that you go or to what section you go. I hadn't noticed on on previous trips to Castaway Cay, but that was my first trip at the beginning of April and to Serenity Bay. Better to take the watersocks and not need them. Then to wish you had them.

I just got back this week. I didn't wear my watershoes at all. Yes there is shells but the only time I needed sandals was walking to Cookies. The asphalt is really hot. If you don't like the feel of seaweed on your feet, water socks may be warranted.

Storms can play a big part of how much shell and other debris are in the sand. Having lived on the Gulf Coast for most of my life a storm (small or large) can either deposit thousands of shells and shell fragments or wash them out. So there is no guarantee that a storm will cause the beach to be one way or another.

I will take shells any day over wet material on my feet!!

Me too! I have dragged water shoes for 5 ppl on several beach vacations and those suckers are heavy in the suitcase! We usually bring ours to protect against stingrays, actually. And I still could not get my family to use them. So I am not bringing them on our next vacation and I will hope and pray that our luck holds!
