What is the "rope drop?

I've been on several different threads and have heard the phrase rope drop. What is that?

First! That is the key word... you are right at the turnstiles well before the park opens.. so when the "rope drops" you are one of the first ones in!!!

...and there are brief shows prior to rope drop. My favorite is Magic Kingdom where the Mayor comes out and welcomes everyone, followed by the dancers, followed by the train with the main Disney characters. It brings a tear to my eye everytime I see it. I make it a point to start my first day at WDW with the MK rope drop.
