what is the point of a garter?

I really want to wear a garter under my dress and possibly incorporate one of the something old... traditions into the garter, but I will not be having a garter toss. We are having a DCL wedding and our "reception" will be more of a cake and champagne celebration so it would be awefully ackward to have one. I completely agree about the role of the garter for the wedding night ;D

and... change of plans on my "i don't need a garter because there is no point to it."
DF has just said to me... "We are going to Disney so you can be a princess and have a princess wedding. You are wearing a garter belt and stockings, okay? If you can wear a tiara, you can put on a garter for me." LOL okay then.
So instead of just not wearing a garter... he has just added and made it even more elaborate.
