I am not, and never have been, a Colonel.
(Well, that's not exactly true. More below.*)
My handle is in honor of my undergrad alma mater, Centre College. They were a national football power back in the leather-helmet era, defeating teams such as Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana, Virginia Tech, TCU, Arizona and Ole Miss. Statistician Jeff Sagarin retroactively named Centre the 1919 national champion. Their 1921 win over Harvard, which had not lost a game in 4 years, has been called the greatest upset of the first half-century.
They were known back then as the "Praying Colonels," and even though it was later shortened to just the "Colonels," I (as do most alums) still like the old nickname better.
*--Way back when, I was made a member of the Honorable Order Of Kentucky Colonels. It used to be a very prestigious society, but stopped being especially prestigious around the time I was inducted.
