My ds just came home with his report card. He was pretty upset that he didnt make high honor roll. That is I think nothing less than a 95 in any class. He even got 2 100 grades but he did make 1st honor roll. I told him, stop being so hard on yourself, I am so proud of you etc. His school is very academic. His grading scale is:
A+ 96-100
A 96-97
A- 94-95
B+ 91-93
B 86-90

Does this seem reasonable.

One of the high schools I attended (1 out of 4) used this grading scale. The other schools used the standard 90-80-70-60 scale. Obviously I preferred the grading scale that left more room for A's but my understanding is that in certain parts of the country the scale you posted is the standard.

The interesting part for me was the the HS I attended that had the harder scale just put the grade percentage on the grade cards rather than a letter grade so when I transferred after my junior year the grades I had that semester (only in the school for one semester) were changed to letter grades on the 90-80-70-60 scale so that 91 or something I had in a class went from a B to an A. :)

At my daughter's school, she is in 8th grade, the scale is:

100- 90 = A
89 - 80 = B
79 - 70 = C
69 - 60 = D

There is no "high" honor roll.

Our middle school uses pretty much the same scale. They have an A honor roll and a B honor roll. To tell you the truth, it really doesn't matter what scale they use, the kids will spread out pretty much the same way. I prefer a bell curve personally, but not many schools use that.

I do not care how academic a school says they are and how high they make their grades fact is that human intelligence looks more like a bell curve than a horizontal line. You can make any scale you want but the fact remains that it is just another way to name a rose to para phrase.

We have gotten away from - and + in our high school. In my opinion that is stupid. If you are an 80% and that is called a B and you are an 89% and that too is called a B what incentive would someone who is say 82 to really push to get to the higher grade?? I mean if the almost c student and the almost A student are not differentiated then most kids are going to say why bother. In my opinon, it does not foster academic achievment but rather fosters medocrity and complacency.

My DD is in 7th grade and our grading scale is the same as above. You have to have a 97 average to make the Principal's List. A average for honor roll.
