What is the "European plan"?

If a resort says rates are for the "European plan" what does that mean? I always get that and the American plan confused. One includes meals I think - but which is it? This is not a WDW resort question, but I knew you all would know the answer. Thanks!

European plan is room only. I think American plan includes breakfast.
