I am just entering the scrapbooking world, and have heard people mentioned the cricut, cuttlebug and sizzix? What exactly do you use them for - with my limited knowledge, I am thinking you make die-cuts with them? What's the difference between all of them...is one better than the other? Thanks!

A Cricut is a Die Cut machine, runs on power and cartridges (carts). You can cut items on the various carts in sizes from 1" to 5.5" in 1/2 increments (except under 1" - there is a 1.25 as well). This is on the "baby bug", the smaller Cricut.

A cuttlebug also does die cuts but also embosses and you have to buy the dies individually. You crank a handle to send it through to be cut. The Sizzix works the same way I think, I only have a Cricut and Cuttlebug. I do know that the Sizzix and Cuttlebug dies can be used on both of those machines.

Yes, they are all die cut machines.

The Sizzix is a manual machine. You buy individual dies that make 1-4 shapes. There are a couple of variations. "Big Red," the dies are about 1/2" thick and sell for $5-$15. It has a big lever that you move up and down to cut things. You can get an adapter to cut Sizzlets with it. Because of the steel dies you can cut a wide variety of materials (paper, chipboard, vinyl, fabric, fun foam). However, since they came out with the Big Kick, some dies won't work in the Sizzix. I'm not sure how many places still sell this one and just sell the Big Kick instead.

The Sidekick is smaller, it uses "Sizzlets" which comes in packs of 4 for $20, or alphabets that are very expensive. The sizzlets aren't very thick. You feed it into the machine and turn a crank to cut things.

The new machine is the Big Kick, which uses the thicker dies, but you feed it and turn the crank. You can use any of the dies with it, including the Cuttlebug dies.

The Cuttlebug is also a manual machine. I've never used one but I think your feed and turn a crank too. And I think you can use the Sizzix dies with it, although I think some people are afraid to use the big dies because part of it can break. The company that makes the Cuttlebug used to co-own the Sizzix but when they sold out they came out with the Cuttlebug. They also make the Cricut.

The Cricut is an electronic cutter. You buy a cartridge that has a wide variety of shapes or letters. You type what you want to cut in the keypad and then it cuts it out for you. The cartridges retail for $90, but there are lots of sales to get them between $45-$60.

Wow...thank you so much. Now I have a better understanding of the three different machines...I think I really like the Cricut, and realized that I just missed a great black friday sale on this...I guess I should just start saving right now for one! I am an electronic gadget kinda girl...so the cricut really appeal to me.

I have both cricuts and sizzix. I have used my sizzix once since buying my cricut.
The thing that appealed to me most about the cricut was the fact that I can change the sizes of the fonts and images where the sizzix is one size only.

Keep checking Walmart, Michael's, and ACMoore (online store) for sales, the prices have dropped a lot since they first came out.

I don't think we've seen the last of the Cricut sales this holiday season. I don't know anything specific, but a lot of retailers are worried this year, so I think we will see more good deals. Maybe $129 instead of $119 or something.

Walmart still had the sale for 119.00 today..and according to the associate I heard talking they are suppose to be that way for a while.... but that is just hearsay.. no prove to that...

I use my sizzix, my sizzlet, and my cricut all the time... It just depends on my mood and what I'm looking for at the time...

I just got one today for $119. It will stay on sale until they sell out of the specially marked packages, so if you really want it, hurry to your walmart and grab one if they have any left! Mine still has 6-8.
