What is the difference between a "mini-moon" and a Honeymoon?

I just don't get it, so it now counts as a "mini-moon" if you only have 7 days vacation after your wedding??

People Magazine - "Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' post-wedding trip to Italy's Amalfi Coast is apparently just a mini-honeymoon, and the proper one will come sometime down the road, Kim tells PEOPLE"

Don't get me wrong, I love following celebrity gossip, but I think a 7 day trip to Italy is what 99.9% of the rest of the world would call a honeymoon. Other celebs have started doing this as well and now i'm hearing this word over and over. Since when does a Honeymoon have to be longer than a week to call it a mini-moon or is that celebrity speak for "i'm rich and can take a month".

All it does is raise the expectations of spoiled godzilla brides.

The concept is not new. Many average people, for whatever reason can't take an extended amount of time from work, so they have a short weekend getaway after the wedding and later on, take the extended official honeymoon. The super wealthy have just turned 2 days into a week, and called it a mini-moon to make themselves feel more separate from the "poor" people.

It just means her TV appearances take first priority over spending time with her new husband.

Yeah, it's a way for "rich, important" (:rotfl:'cause we all know the Kardashians make the world go round) people to put themselves above the little people. :snooty:

The definition is based on the size.... (this portion of text deleted due to this being a family board)

We had 3 nights in Jamaica for our honeymoon and I went back to work on the Thursday after our Saturday wedding. I didn't consider it a mini anything. :confused3

So, what's wrong with calling it what it is: "We're just going away for a quick weekend alone right after the wedding, we'll take our honeymoon later"?

I'm frankly fed up with people and entities making up words.

I think the honeymoon is taken directly after the wedding...no matter how short. If it's 3 months down the road it's no longer a honeymoon, it's a vacation.

So do you cringe at "Disneymoon" and "babymoon?" I do.
Oh, yes! It's not a 'Disneymoon', it's a honeymoon at Walt Disney World. And a babymoon? A what???

http://etymonline.com/?term=honeymoon :
honeymoon
1540s, hony moone, but probably much older, "indefinite period of tenderness and pleasure experienced by a newly wed couple," from honey in reference to the new marriage's sweetness, and moon in reference to how long it would probably last, or from the changing aspect of the moon: no sooner full than it begins to wane. French has cognate lune de miel, but German version is flitterwochen (pl.), from flitter "tinsel" + wochen "week." In figurative use from 1570s. Specific sense of "post-wedding holiday" attested from c.1800; as a verb in this sense from 1821. Related: Honeymooned; honeymooning.

Nothing in there about theme parks, babies, or mini-anything.

A babymoon is a trip you take before you have a baby. I don't know if you're supposed to take it while you're pregnant, or before you start trying to get pregnant. I think it's supposed to be one last "just us" trip. I find it hard to consider the concept objectively just because the name makes me ill. :crazy2:

Back when we got married, we had a mini-moon. DH had just gotten outta basic. He had to report to his duty station, 12 days after we got married, so our whole mini-moon, was us spending 2 night at the honeymoon suite at a hotel in our home town.

20 years later, we still haven't taken that official honeymoon. Some day, maybe I'll get one.

Although I wouldn't personally use it, the term makes sense for a one, two, or three day getaway. I agree with the OP that calling a 7 day trip a "mini" moon is ridiculous.

My honeymoon was a week and it was definitely a complete honeymoon. It was actually the perfect amount of time because we were ready to get back, finish opening gifts, set up our home, etc. We kept several vacation days for this. We basically each had two full weeks off for wedding, honeymoon, and getting settled.

I wonder if we're going to have year long "maxi-moons" soon.:lmao:

My honeymoon was one night at a local hotel. :lovestruc

People just like to make-up words so they seem trendy.
