What is the diff. between "school" glue and all purpose?

My DD6's supply list specifically says NO school glue, All purpose please.

There must be a good reason: takes too long to dry, doesn't hold well etc.
Does anybody know?

I know school glue is washable, but I am not sure of the other differences.

HMMM, not really sure, but I know some of my DD's glue sticks don't stick very well, so maybe that's the reason...
totally random thought, but does anyone remember the giant jars of paste that you used to use in school? and double dog daring someone to eat it??? I was always that kid that ate it!

Our list also specifies all-purpose. School glue was up front at Wal-Mart with all the cheap school stuff. I had to walk back to the regular school supplies section for all-purpose, which wasn't on sale. Buying for 3 kids, I said screw it and bought the school glue anyhow.

I asked the school secretary and she said the school glue doesn't work as well. She also said don't worry about bringing it - other parents will, too.

I think school glue is fine for most things. Maybe if they use googly eyes or some more crafty things then all-purpose might work better.

As a teacher and a crafter- I can maybe clear it up?
School glue is washable, but all purpose glue is washable while still wet.
School glue is mainly for use with paper. It won't hold googly eyes, fabric, plastic or foam details as well. It doesn't stick to plastic or wood for longer than a day or two.
All purpose glue will do all of the above things without a problem.

Teachers probably just want students to be prepared with a glue that will work for all projects all year long.

I think school glue will be okay- you may need to re-glue things at home with a stronger glue. Especially if they are things you'll want to keep- like holiday decorations or Mother's Day gifts.

I remember the paste jars. My teacher would give each of us a small tupperware container with it an dwe would refill throughout the year. But after 1st grade the paste was gone, as well as the "nice"smell. We just don't see it anymore. Can you even buy it?

I don't know that you could ever buy it. Guess you can: Just did a search and apparantly Elmers makes some that comes in powder form that you just mix with water and it makes about 4 quarts of paste with a 2 oz pkg of powder. When I was in school our art teacher made up a whole batch home made for all the teachers though.

I know that we use it to make "gack" by mixing it with a borax solution and food coloring. School glue won't work.

In my experience the school glue is more salty and the all-purpose has a sweeter taste. The glue sticks are tricky, they are purple but do not taste anything like grape!

I never tried the purple glue sticks, now you've got me wonderin' if there's one in my arts and craft boxes!
