Before we check into PB we want to stay one night in a cheap hotel near universal, but we also want to stay somewhere halfway decent. Anyone have any suggestions?

I can totally recommend the La Quinta on Universal Blvd / just off I Drive ( near the Convention Centre ).

Stayed there for a week with my girlfriend back in december. I can't fault it. The price, breakfast, rooms, staff etc were all excellent PLUS it's quiet and a lovely decor ( pretty new too ).

It's hard to do better and won't break the bank !

We have booked the fairfield inn by Marriot. It is very close to US, provides breakfast, shuttles and costs about $60 for a room. Also if is quite new and has good reports on www.tripadivor.com

I can second the vote for the Fairfield Inn Universal Studios. It is across the street from the UO complex and is one of the newest hotels in that area. The rooms were clean and nicely appointed. The hotel has interior corridors (a must for me). The deluxe continental breakfast was good, too. I believe we paid around $59.00 a night by using www.hotelkingdom.com.

You can try priceline. The Wyndam resort on i-drive usually comes up for around $35. It's a pretty nice 3* and is about a 1/2 mile from US. We've stayed there quite a few times.

The CHEAPEST yet decent hotel near Universal has to be the Motel 6 off of International Drive, on American Way.

Yes, I know, it's a Motel 6, I know what your thinking. But consider a Motel 6, as you would imagine one, *BUT* brand new and clean! This Motel 6 has been opened for about less than a year, so it has yet to go throgugh all the ailments that suffer most cheapy hotels.

It is bare bones, amenities wise (reletivly small room, plain decore, no shampoo or conditioner, non-enclosed closet, and I would probbaly suggest you bring your own towels) but it's in much better shape then you'd find other hotels in the same price range (and even some more expensive stays). Oh right, the price...

...it's only $30.

Thats the price I've been able to get from Orbitz on numerous ocassions, and if you can't you would probably find the regular walk up rate to be no more then $45.

Oh yeah, and it's also only half a mile away from Universal.
