What is the Castaway Club?

I've never been on a Disney cruise, just booked for January 2017. I see a lot of posts about a Castaway Club...what is that? Can someone explain to me what it is and how my family and I can join?

The Castaway Club is a "club" you automatically become a member of after your first cruise. It's essentially benefits for past cruisers. The more you cruise the better the gifts, add-ons, etc. get. There are three levels Silver (1-4 past cruises), Gold (5-9 past cruises), and Platinum (10+ past cruises). The Castaway Club is the loyalty program on DCL. You "join" by taking a Disney cruise. Once you've completed one DCL cruise, you are Silver. Upon completion of 5 DCL cruises you are Gold, and Platinum once you've completed 10 DCL cruises.

My bet is your probably want to be Platinum by then to have the best chance for the inaugural. (Just my guess, no proof or experience personally to know if that will help)
